HI I HAVE BEEN GIVEN A 500GB WD EXTERNAL HARDDRIVE.WHEN I PLUG IT INTO THE USB PORT I CAN SEE IT IN DEVICES AND PRINTERS BUT CANT OPEN IT. I AM NOT VERY GOOD ON PC . DO I NEED TO INSTALL SOME SOFT WARE TO FIND IT OR DO I NEED TO MAKE CHANGES TO MY PC FORMAT?.CAN ANYONE HELP ?.KIND REGARDS DANNY 

      THE HARD DRIVE IS A BLACK 500GB MY PASSPORT.

Is the drive an internal unit with an enclosure or a regular external drive?

Check if the drive appears on disk management.

Hi,

The hard drive is in a hard plastic black case. It uses a USB 3.0 cable, so i assume it must be quite new.When i plug it into the USB port on my desk top it comes up in devices and printers but not in my computer.I can see it but cant open it.Have you any ideas as my computer knowledge is quite poor ?.In devices and printer it comes up as My Passport 0740.

Hi John, I have managed to get into Disk Management.It says disk 2 basic 931.48 online.200 mb Healthy (EFI SYST.931.16 GB Healthy primary partition.128 MB unallicated. I can right click all the other drives in disk management and  open them as they are in black. The WD my passport drive is in grey and does not open. Can you please advise me on what to try next. Did you use with another computer that runs on a different OS?

My computer uses windows 7. How do I know what the hard drive runs on ?.

We will need the model number of the drive to verify that.
