Help! Can't update firmare or connect to the wireless network

I had this WD Live HD Player for about a year and it plays media into my HD TV just fine from my 1TB MyBook.

I’ve been trying to register the device for Netflix and I haven’t been so frustrated since zit time in high school.

The WD Live unit I have is on firmware 1.0.12. First i tried to connect it to the internet via a wired RJ45 cable into my MacBookPro runniing SnowLeopard 10.6.8 and a shared internet connection into the wireless network provided by the BELL Fibe 6 (high speed fiberoptics network) modem I have at home (Toronto, Canada). It would work on pulling up a valid IP address and the rest of the info in Automtic mode, however it will NOT be able to connect to the DNS server when verifying the connection from the Network Settings menu. I tried the manual setup with same results.

The Bell modem is set on WEP for wireless and the MAC address of teh WD Live unit has been added to the “Allowed” device for connection.

Then I purchased a Belkin Basic Wireless USB Adapted F7D1101 which is supposed to work on the latest 1.05.04_B. Alas, I cannot install it as per the Notes for the firmware upgrade because the WD Live unit will NOT see the 3 files, contrary to what the instructions say. I’ve tried changing the drives (which otherwise would be read just fine) resetting to fa tory defaults, etc. NO way it wants to do it.

Also, with teh Belkin wireless adapted plugged on on the side USB port, as sbhown in the instructions, the WD unit does not show the Wired or Wireless screen in Network Settings as shown in the “How to Configure the Network” instructions on this website.

So here I am caught between a rock and a hard place… can anybody help me please?

TIA

Hmmm… further to my previous post and reading through the 40+ pages of user discontent with the 1.05.04_B firmware upgrade, I’ve donloaded and copied on a thumb drive the 1.04.31_V, and as by magic the WDLHD recognized tne new firmware, updated correctly AND was able to connect top the wireless network via the Belkin adapter…YEY!

Still can’t connect to Netflix but i’m workin on that… can see about 10 Intenet Media sources though (Pandora, Flickr, etc.)

You have multiple problems.

  1. If you have a WD Live you cannot upgrade it to get Netflix. Netflix is only available on the Live+ and Live Hub. ( Update- and while I was typeing you confirm you have a Live so NO Netflix)

  2. Using a wired connection to your MacBook to get Internet access will probably not work unless you have correctly set up a bridge. From what you say it seems not. Connect your WD Live directly to your router.

  3. You must use the correct firmware for the WD Live (Live+ and Live Hub firmware will not work). You can find it here- http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?wdc_lang=en&fid=wdsfWDTV_Live. You must also use a correctly formatted, preferrably FAT32, drive, my preference has always been a USB memory stick. Just follow the instructions in the download zip.

Based in the firmware update that you used (1.04.31_V), it indicate that you have a WD TV Live, not the plus, as  parnott100  told you, Nextflix is not available for your WD TV model, is only available for the Live Plus and the Hub.

Yep, that seems to confirm the conclusions of the discussions with the Netflix Canada support rep, although he was of the opinion that WD manufactures products with different capabilities for US and Canada.

Indeed it is a WD Live HD, and not a Live+. Now that is a bummer, since although a Mac guy, the WD Live seems to deliver so much more than the Apple TV box.

What threw me off is that Netflix is specifically mentioned inthe supported formats on the back of the cardboard packaging it came in when I bought it at Costco.

Well, I guess I have to spring new money for the Hub.

Thank you both anyway.

Really?   That would be quite an error.

Does the packaging say WDTV Live+?   Maybe someone returned a LIVE in a Live+ BOX (in other words, someone stole a Live+.)

If so, take it back to Costco and tell them what happened.
