HELP PLEASE - I can't even get started!

I am a Mac user with a 2TB mycloud. I go to “setup”, get the “get started” button (as per page 11 of the downloaded manual), click on it.
A search starts, the device is found and offers an IP address - 192.168.1.111.
Then it differs from page 12 of the manual!
I get asked for a device user name (“admin” is defaulted) and a password. I tried to fill in the fields and press “login”.
The result is that I am told I need to be an administrator - nothing else.
I am designated admin on my MAC.

All ides gratefully received .

You need to log in as admin on the MyCloud.

The MyCloud is a computer. It has user accounts. One of these accounts is admin. Only admin is allowed access to the Dashboard.

If you have the manual, I would skip past the introductory sections that drive you down an automated setup path, and go the the section on the Dashboard. All setup can be done via the Dashboard, and you will learn more about how the device works by doing that than using the automated setup.

p16 Getting Started Using the Dashboard

You don’t need to set up a mycloud.com account right now; you can skip that by hitting ‘cancel’. You can do it later.

If, for some reason, your device already has an admin account set up, you can clear the password by pressing the reset button for four seconds. The default admin password is blank (I.e. no password).

I suggest using no admin password – it can be created later. This way, wheb you see user name/password just hit enter (no password). Makes setup easier.as you go in and out of dashboard

Do you have a My Cloud or a my Cloud Home?

Hi, Thanks for taking the trouble to reply.
I got in via the reset route. I found user details so it seems the unit had been set up previously, hence my problem with following the standard set up procedure.
I have taken this up with the supplier as it was sold as brand new. Should have gone direct to WD.
Thanks again.

Hi, Thanks for taking the trouble to respond.
Please see my reply to an above comment.
I have a My Cloud. I am aware of My Cloud Home but frankly I am not clear about the differences. Is the latter a replacement for the former?
Thanks again.

Good that you do NOT have a “Home” model. Many are very disappointed with the Home, for good reasons, many thought it was a successor to the original, but it is a very different product that is less machine and so different from the My Cloud. Read some of the many threads here and you will get the idea.Good luck with your new device.

The following WD Knowledgebase article details some of the differences between the My Cloud and My Cloud Home units:
