Only network, from a PC.
The USB port is a host, not a slave… it’d be like connecting 2 PC’s together with a USB cable – it doesn’t work.
If you have the media on an external drive, you can attach that to the USB and probably save some time. But trying to copy onto a drive and then back off, at USB2 rates, you’re probably quicker just using the ethernet connection.

Heck, yeah, you ought to be getting closer to 10 megaBYTES per second. Meaning you’re getting about 1/20th of what I get.
If he’s connecting wirelessly, he may be getting around 3-4MB/s (which is what I get on powerline and wifi, although if I hold the dongle and stand on one leg I can get up to 7MB/sec).
Only super-stable wifi, powerline and of course good 'ol wired networks get 10MB/sec.
The Live Hub is pretty slow at file transfers. You might want to try copying files to an external HDD or flash drive and plugging that into the Hub, then copying the files from there.
