How best to copy 3.5TB from MyBook to MyCloud EX$

I have just got a MyCloud EX4 and the first step is to copy existing content from MyBook to MyCloud (both on the same gigabit router).  I figure if the copy can proceed at 60 MB/sec it will take 16 hr or so, but if it can only go at 20 MB/sec it will take 48 hr.

  1.  I thought I maybe could use the MyCloud app on my laptop and copy off MyBook and paste on MyCloud but this does not appear to be possible - the paste is greyed out.
  2. I could make a safepoint from MyBook to MyCloud but I am not sure what steps to take to make the safepoint copy become the operational NAS content, and also from something I read I think this would only go at about 20MB/sec

So any suggestions will be very welcome.  Thanks.

So I have tried the simple minded use of WIndows to copy from MyBook and paste in MyCloud.  The transfer rate is about 7 MB/s.  At this rate the transfer could take 6 days and tie up the laptop for all that time.  If I do decide to use Windows then using robocopy would be better that copy & paste in File Explorer because it can easily resume after an interruption - and in 6 days or so interuptions can happen.

But there must be a better way that does not pass the files through Windows.  I can turn on ssh and FTP on both MyCloud and MyBook. But the sftp client which is on MyCloud does not seem to support “get -r” so is of limited use.  So now I am looking at smbclient - looks hopeful but I am a slow learner. More later.

Well, smbclient can move a nested folder of files and the speed seems to be around 18 MB/s.  BUT all the file creation and modification dates are set to NOW, which really troubles me.

So, next my attention will turn to rsync - but that can wait till tomorrow.

Hi there and welcome to the WD community.

Assuming you have everything connected gigabit, the transfer speeds seem to be low. What types of files are you trying to copy between the units.

Thanks for your response.

Just finished a transfer of 220 Gb of digital photos (many around 3 MB).  It took 9 hr 25 min which I figure is 6.9 MB/s.  I ran rsync on the MyCloud and the command was like

rsync -avf root@Mybook:Photos Newfolder

Both NAS units are connected to a TP-Link Archer C7 gigabit router.  Both appear to be in good health.

I would appreciate any suggestions that could improve the transfer rate>

Oh same router I have the MyBook you have is it a USB drive ? if you have an ex series have you tried to do a USB to NAS backup?

Thanks for your response ArMak.  But I don’t fully understand.

The Mybook has a USB 2 port on the back but I was thinking that was so you could add an external USB drive to the MyBook NAS.  I do not see how the Mybook could be USB connected to the MyCloud.  Am I missing something?

Hi there,

What is the model of you MyCloud and also the model of your MyBook ?

Hi ArMak, it is a MyCloud EX4 (SN:[Deleted])and a MyBook Live Duo (SN:[Deleted]), Thanks.

I have continued working with rsync and further copies show that I am averaging 4.6 MB/s.  It’s currently been working for 1 day on a 2 TB folder of videos, and it looks like it will take a week to complete.

So that’s the bad news.

The good news is that rsync is a good tool to be working with.  It preserves file creation and modification dates (and eveythiing).  If the process is interrupted and you restart it it will not re-copy the files that have already been copied.  If you get it running as a background process on the MyCloud EX4, you can take the laptop away and later bring it back to check the progress.

To get it as a background process I set up a pair of ssh keys and put the public key in MyBookLive’s .ssh directory.  This is so it would not be prompting for a password.  I have the rsync in a small shell script so it is quick and easy to run the same command again.

I would still love to hear any advice that could get me faster transfer rates.
