I’ve just bought a My cloud EX2 as I needed to back up and store information that I have on an external hard-drive. I can back up what’s on my laptop hard-drive but I can’t work out how to transfer files from the external hd to the NAS. I’ve tried using the desk-top app but it seems to want to copy the files to the desktop and there isn’t enough space. I’ve also tried using the set up a USB back-up on the online MyCloud set up, but while it recognises the USB drive, it won’t provide a source folder for me to choose. I’ve tried attaching the USB drive to the laptop and directly to the NAS drive, neither seem to work. This is quite new to me so if anyone can point me towards step-by-step instructions I’d be very grateful.
With thanks!
Hey aredden, Me no expert but the best way I found to shuttle files between your local drives and your EX2 in a WinOS system is to use the WD MyCloud provided utility that is called “WD Discovery”. Once you find the network connected EX2 in the list, you can map to the drives by assigning a drive letter to each (Don’t use the auto setting but select the drive letters manually and to make it easily recognizable e.g. make one "Z:" and the second drive "Y:", if necessary.)
Now if you open your FileExplorer; your WinOS will display and treat these (Z/Y) as if they were normal physical drives connected to your system.
And you can do all the things that you want to do, like creating folders and copying files (even drag&drop) back and forth, etc.
I hope this was what you were partially asking for.
Many thanks - I’ll try that and see what happens.
Thanks again and best.
Just realised that these instructions are for windows. I’m using a MAC. I’m guessing things are different - will look for WD Discovery anyway. I’ve found a programme called WD Access and I’ve installed that but it doesn’t seem to work or do anything.
