I fried my hard drives. (How) Can I fix it?

So I made a small mistake in my wiring of the HDD power, and managed to switch the 5 and 12V pins due to using a bad MOLEX plug. Now my Red drives show the symptoms of not doing anything, no detection in bios, no spinning up. I have sufficient backups of the data on the drives so don’t care about recovery.

I’m pretty sure the drives are dead as after fixing the power wiring, I tested the sata power and data with another drive, and that one does show in the bios. Also tried connecting it to an external usb enclosure and it doesn’t show either.

Is this fixable within reasonable budget? Doing a PCB swap for example? Or will RMAing the drives to WD support help me? If so any idea of the cost they would charge, as this is damage due to my own fault, and not on warranty.

Hi pinda,

Maybe you should try contacting WD’s Technical Support about this.
