I just updated my firmware and now my WDTV Live is dead

The download was 100% successful, then it restarted, showed me the WDTV logo and the HDMI signal dropped. I left it alone for a few mins and it rebooted on its own. Then I got the WDTV logo and the HDMI signal dropped once again. I waited a REALLY long time and nothing ever came up. I turned it off, then turned it back on and all I get is the logo. That’s it.

Who is responsible for making my WDTV into a useless brick?

Every single time I update my firmware, it feels like I am taking a step backwards and I always wish I never did it. Everytime I update it, I hope it improves but it just gets worse.

If WD does not send me a replacement, I wont be buying anything from them for life. That’s for sure.

Who do I contact for a replacement?

It’s possible it’s using the composite video output.  Connect to the TV using the composite and see if you get a signal.  If you do, then you can go into the setup and tell it to use HDMI.

Those cables are long gone. I have owned this for almost 3years now and never used anything other than HDMI.

The warranty for this product has expired. We cannot offer any service for this product at this time.

SIMPLE SOLUTION.

Buy a new one at the store and return the old one. PROBLEM SOLVED.

Is it that your screen completely goes black. I recently updated the firmware over wireless and it downloaded sucessfully and installed. But after reboot it failed to recoginize the wireless and couldnt finish the final step of installation. So even if the underlying firmware was the latest, every time it rebooted it would try to finish the installed. I followed the USB installation method and it worked without a problem, I recommend you do that

I have never ‘told’ the unit to use HDMI or composite. You just connect it and it works. You may have to tell it the HDMI resolution but the HDMI / composite outputs always works. The menu is not an output selector its an output setup.

Why not just steal one from the store as its the same as your so called Simple Solution.

I will give that a try. Thanks!

I see that you have now found a simpler solution that does not mean breaking the law.

Yeah, I probably wasn’t perfectly clear on that.  Both interfaces should work simutaneously, but if the HDMI blanks out, you should be able to use the composite to figure out what’s going on.  BUT, he has a fix, so onward and upward!

I got a 16GB USB stick and put the new firmware on the stick in the root of the drive.

When I boot up my WDTV it no longer gives me a WD logo.

My receiver does detect a video signal from the HDMI but nothing is displaying (black screen).

What does the tiny reset button do that is located beside the USB port #1?

I cannot manually update the firmware without being able to access the menu so I am pretty confident that its FUBAR’ed

If pressed quickly, the RESET button restores factory defaults.

If pressed for more than 10 seconds, it switches between PAL and NTSC video format.

Hello

Im having an issue with the new firmware is wondering if there is a solution.  Ever since the new firmware was downloaded i can only watch about 15 min of a movie then it starts to freeze than fast forward until it is completely frozen you then have to  unplug the power sourse to reset the unit.
