I'm done

Thanks for trying guys.

I’m 70 hyrs old, have had, built computers since the 80s.  I can even code.

I have just spent 1/2 hr trying to get back in to answer your questions, and the capcha has been giving an error.

I have tried using the setup app from the WD Mycloud site and it ends with a message that it probably won’t be able to work.

I tried the desktop app, it never connects to the drive (which I can see and use with a file manager).   At one point I get a message to update  firmware.  But as I can’t get to the drive, how do I update it.

I bought the drive as a dedicated backup drive, so I need the software to do that.  I would also like to access the drive remotely.  Again, I need to use WD’s software, which will not install.

I’m old and grumpy and have no patience with a product that can’t do what it is advertised to do.  As I’ve said, I wasted 2 days trying to install 2 apps.  Unless I can do so soon, the drive goes back (which for me is a 120 mi round trip).  A shame.

Hello cfbush2000,

I can at least help you with loging in since I do that quite often, signing out and signing back in to find that WD community gives me an error.

To get back in , head to Sign in and before you enter your catcha, click on the English at the top of the banner. This reloads the page with another captcha.

Now enter your Captcha and click on Sign in.

This was my workaround.

Bennor is apparently, our Windows 10 community expert and he seems to know how to get the apps working in windows 10. Head back to your other post and answers his questions and you should ge up and running soon.

Good luck

Thanks Ralphael

Last night I got things working.  I did a backup of one drive.  This morning I did a second drive.  About 2 hours ago the Mycloud vanished.  None of my computers can connect to it.  My goal now is to get my data off the drive and return it.

Reading through this forum (I wish I had done that before I bought it) I can see that the problems never end.  I can’t believe WD would release a product that just dosen’t work a large part of the time.  As a photographer I can’t spend hours fighting a defective product and risking my images.

Thanks for trying to help.

Chuck

cfbush2000,

If you manage to get things working, you are 3/4 the way there. The problem isn’t so much the WD Cloud itself but the surrounding technology around it.

The main reason that if the cloud does vanish is that you do have to assign a static IP to it otherwise it is like having a random phone number everyday. It’s true. If you turn on your printer before turning on your Cloud, the IP that it had yesterday will be assigned to the printer.

WD has tried to make it easy by creating programs that try to hide these behind the scene problems. IP assignment has been around for a couple of decades and the only reason you start to hear about it in WD Cloud is that you are trying to access the cloud.

Not trying to talk you out of sending it back but as a photographer (I am too), you will need a large storage system. However now that I think about it, perhaps a USB drive will suit you better as you can simply copy all your files over without any IP worries.

Sorry to hear you’re still having trouble. I agree with Raphael; it is very likely to be an IP address problem.

As to whether to take it back, you need to ask the following questions:

  1. Do you need a data store that is always on, and accessible by any device from anywhere within your home network?

  2. Do you need a data store that can be accessed when away from home?

  3. Do you need a streaming media server?

  4. Do you need a data store that supports multiple users?

If the answer to all these questions is ‘no’, then you do not need a network attached storage device, and you would be better off buying a large, external USB disk, or a large, internal SATA disk, depending on whether you want to be able to take your data with you, or secure it away from your computer.

An external USB or internal SATA disk will also give much faster data transfer than a NAS.

While I appreciate the vote of confidence , I am no “expert” on Windows 10 and the interaction with WD devices. Can only comment at the moment on how Windows 10 Pro interacts with the WD My Cloud without using or installing the WD software or apps. People are bound to have some problems with Windows 10 and WD devices, problems for which in some rare iinstances there may be no good workaround or fix until WD or its partners updates its products software or firmware.
