Is it possible to automatically sync with multiple computers?

Apologize if this has been asked or addressed, I just spent the last hour trying to debug SmartWare on my PC and don’t have much time to research answers right now.

Anyways, basically I would like to use my 1tb WD Passport to backup files from multiple computers (my work pc, my personal laptop, and my work laptop). I have set up my work pc to automatically send files from my work folder to My Passport. But would it be possible to have it set up so that when I plug in My Passport to another PC, it would take that same folder and put it on the PC, automatically update it, and also automatically backup files that I move/add?

If this is a confusing question I’ll try to simplify. Essentially I want to have one specific folder with all of my work files and have it so that this folder has the same files for all of my computers when I connect My Passport. I would like it so that whenever I connect my PassPort to one of my three PCs (that I have all the WD Software installed on), this specific folder is automatically synced and continues to update while I’m working on said PC. This would save a lot of time as I would not have to manually ‘retrieve’ this specific folder everytime I wanted to do work, and would ensure my PCs and WD Passport always had the same files in the folder.

Thanks for any/all help.

Since these units are FTP enabled, have you thought about installing an ftp program that would check for updates and then sync the folder?

I have not, I do not really know enough about this kind of stuff to know how to go about doing that. While I’m pretty literate in terms of computers and technology, I’m not, by any means, ‘advanced.’

When you go into the configuration of the MyBookLive check off FTP.

Download an ftp client for every computer you want to sync. Log onto the MBL with the FTP program using the

You should be able to find the options in the program to sync which folders. WINSCP is the program i recommend

Ah I see, I don’t have My Book Live. I have a WD “My Passport” external hard drive (that comes with WD SmartWare as the main backup program). So I’m assuming I should buy a different device (one that has the My Book Live software) to be able to do this?

Sorry wasn’t sure what device you had.

So do you leave your computer on all the time with the passport connected? What is your setup right now? Do you move the passport around like it is designed to? lol

Currently, I have it setup on my computer at work and just leave it connected with the computer on. I was planning on using it with multiple computers but all of my important files from other computers are already backed up on the Passport, so there is no need for that.

Hello,

I think that you should use SyncToy from Microsoft rather than WD Smartware to do what you want. SyncToy is free (yes yes !) and quite powerfull but simple (I think it is simple but I’m advanced in IT)
