Live Duo not seen my WD Smartware or Quick View in Windows 8

I have recently purchased a 4TB Live Duo NAS despite the bad reviews have am now regretting this action, I installed the device on a Windows 7 laptop and all was good, it appeared in WD Smartware and WD Quick View.

I then got out the laptop I want to backup and I cannot get the WD Smartware to see the Live Duo, I can map a drive to the NAS I can also connect to the web admin site and I on running the WD Net Check all has passed.

I tried the Windows 7 laptop that worked yesterday and that can no longer see the disks in WD Smartware ??? and WD Quick view cannot see them either.

The internal checks on the Live Duo come back as “Passed” i have also tried the following to no prevail…

Ensured the network connect on my laptop has Client for Windows Networks enabled

Ensured that the NAS and the latop are in the same workgroup

Ensured that the firewall is disabled in Windows 8

Restored the NAS to defaults

Uninstalled the WD Smartware re-installed it as per the one that comes with the NAS

Assigned a static IP address to the NAS

Assigned the default dynamic IP to the NAS

DIsabled UAC

Why do all the diagonstics stay that everything fine when it is not, also this seemed to happen after I clicked the “Secure you device” and then needed to enter a password to unlock the device.

The guide for WD Smartware also talks abbout seeting the Live Duo and needing the unlock the disk, but there is simply no NAS shown in the WD Smartware except Dropbox.

Is there an issues the WD Smartware and Windows 8 - that once you try from a Windows 8 device it breaks the NAS…

I am completely out of ideas, and I am thinking that all the “this device is useless” reviews are correct and that I should return this for a refund.

Has anyone had this issue, and fixed it, also please ensure you read the entire history and do not advise me to reset the NAS and reboot my laptop and reinstalled WD smartware.

WD Smareware version used : 2.2.0.8

WD Quick View : v2.0.0.38

Live Duo Firmware : 2.42.02 (4/2013)

Any relevent ideas ??

Well, I have logged a call but your support staff are unable to read the forum…

I added this to the forum post :

I got a response from WDC:

Dear [Deleted],

Thank you for contacting Western Digital Customer Service and Support. My name is [Deleted].

I am sorry to hear that you experience inconveniences with our product, I will gladly assist you.

First I would reinstall the Smartware:

  1. Uninstall Smartware
  2. Uninstall all versions of .NET Framework found in Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features
  3. Reboot computer
  4. Install .NET  http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=17718
  5. Install latest Smartware  http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/wdsmartwareupdate/NAS.asp

If it does not help, please, disable antivirus and firewall and try if the Smartware can see the My Book.

I have already told you I have done this.

On this note I returned my second MyBook Duo unit and I will NOT be buying anymore they are in the current state complete unfit for retail.

Also, recently the web UI is not submitting the $ symbol to the UI, so I needed to reset the device and use a password or “password” as complex password confuse your MyBook Duo.

Please FIX the issues wih these devices, you devices are in peril need of something more than firmware updates.

You can mark this as resolved, unless you can mark this as failed???

Another unhappy WD customer.
