Lost Network shares

I have 2 WDTV Live boxes one in my lounge and one in my bedroom Ive had them for years and on and off Ive had problems but always managed to get them fixed, however not this week!
Everything was fine until yesterday afternoon then both machines started off showing my PC in network shares but came up with invalid username and password (which I have had many times before and eventually it starts to work again but not this time) then when I try it again and goes through asking for the password as always then the box that normally says invalid password come up with ‘unknown error’?
After a number of attempts to connect it then stops showing my PC in network shares completely.
I’m running windows 7, checked all the permissions, done a restore of my PC to a few days ago, have latest firmwire on WDTV so rolled that back to the previous version and still nothing, rebooted everything a million times.
Every now and again it will show my PC name in windows shares I then try to connect and comes back with invalid password, then it disappears again.
I’ve read through the forum my master browser is my router.
Ive even downloaded TVersity and Plex but cant get either of them to work on the WDTV
I just want to watch my programs :frowning: what am I doing wrong?
Any suggestions will help
Thanks

Try creating a new network resource with public permissions by adding “guest”, “anonymous logon”, and “everyone” to the user list.

Thanks Trancer I have done that and still invalid username and password.
I have upgraded by computer to windows 10
Now it shows my computer name in windows shares all the time but it just keeps saying invalid username and password
Anything else I can try?

Andrea, this previous post of mine has helped fix many network shares problems. Check it out and let me know that it fixed your problem.

I’ve always used method one, password protect sharing has always been disabled on my PC, cleared login info for network share many times, do not have option auto logon.
It has however always (even though as above it is disabled on my PC) bought up the box login to andreadesktop and years ago I read in many places leave it as is with anonymous and whatever password is already there, highlight the green tick and then it shows my shared directories. But not for the last 2 days just come invalid username and password???
I have absolutely know idea what has happened just out of the blue!

I had a little trouble following you, but you posted in the Live/Live Plus forum, so if you have either of those and you are set up as I described in Method 1, and still have issues, about all I can suggest is reset the WDTV back to factory defaults and reset your preferred settings in it again (along with Method 1).

If this doesn’t help, you might want to check your router and network settings to see if anything changed. In fact, think back about anything you may have done/changed in the past week that could be affecting the WDTV now. Beyond completing a proper set up of the WDTV, I am at a loss to be much further help.

Andrea, I also get this problem occasionally, the only way I resolved this, is by reinstalling the OS ,“Win 7”. and reshare the media files. I think it has something to do with the WDTV itself, … . , since all my other devices attached to my network ,does not get this problem. . . . . Just stick with a simple windows share, using 3rd party software like plex can complicate further your shares. . . forget that master browser thing , you will only need that if you have more than one network… for home use …don’t bother. . .

I have to disagree with you. I (and many others here) have NEVER needed to re-install WIN 7. FOR ANY REASON AT ALL pertaining to using the WDTV. I consider this a novice sort of “fix”.

The 'Master browser thing" is important, if it is an issue for some people ; especially if a WDTV needs to access many shared drives, etc. It was for my WDTV Live Plus, I had to setup a permanent master browser (my router) and that was done years ago, and since then I have NEVER had lost shares from this issue again.

Same goes for my posted “fix” about setting up the PC and WDTV correctly. It has solved the problem for me and MANY other people.

People go to this forums because they are not experts and need help. She tried all that complicated stuff already, I’m just telling her an option that actually works. It is simple and novice like you said. You only need a master browser if you are in a workgroup. You don’t need a workgroup to share. The machine has a problem with networking, period. . . . . . Your avatar Alfred E. Neuman is perfect for you.

Don’t be an insultive jerk just because I disagree with you. I HAVE a workgroup, so I DO need a master browser, ( and btw, I do not believe I gave her any info about the MB.) Reinstalling Windows it an EXTREME measure for anyone; especially novices. I had to do it once when the HD in an XP laptop failed. That was when HP actually gave us disks to completely re-do the software if necessary due to disk failure. I put on Windows first, it was bare bones, and I needed to re-install all the additional HP software that came with it from a couple of other HP disks. The whole experience was a PITA.

Kudos for recognizing Alfred – you must be a grumpy old man by now to know who he is, and he was a pretty sharp cookie during his time.

Agree, it does for people who have a network setup improperly in some way or another. I did too, until I spent the time to figure out what the problems were and how to solve them. I currently have NO network problems with over 30 gadgets connected to mine. the WDTVs (two of them) work perfectly, the router/modem do too, Kodi works fine installed on two Fire TVs, no issues with my WD NAS, and on and on. Not too bad for Alfred E. Newman!

I know people come here for advice, and I gave the OP some, and I don’t know if she completely followed the SIMPLE network shares and password advice I gave her. Maybe she did – she hasn’t been back here. I am moving on from this thread.
