Maybe just a simple issue.....but Im worried!

Hi Everyone,

Im looking for some help. Quite worried at the moment as all my work is on my WD15EARS drive.

The drive has been working fine (by the way its an RMA drive that was replaced October last year). I transferred about 100 GB of files off my laptop on to this drive last night which seems to have worked no problem. I then come back to it this morning, boot it up, and the drive does not appear in my windows.

I restart the system and it appears in windows, I access it for about 30 seconds and then it disappears again. It does this a few times, then all of a sudden its gone for good. I log in to the bios and find its gone from there too.
After about 2 hours of messing, I finally get it back in to Bios (I actually done this by setting the jumpers to 1.5Gb/s, but I can remove the jumper now and it still recognised)
However, I have done everything to try and get it to show up in windows. But no luck.

The WD life guard tool seems to see it, but the align tool doesnt.
I ran a quick test which failed, Im now running an extended test and its got another 2hrs to go (been running for 6 hours now!!).

Ultimately, I just want to try and get all my work off it now before its too late, there is about 400 Gb of data.

Any ideas on a plan to get the drive recognised and enable me to get the data off it?

Cheers

Russ

Ok, extended test has finish, it found bad sectors but failed to repair them. These are the results

Quick Test - Fail: 06-Quick Test on drive 2 did not complete! Status code = 07 (failed read test element), failture checkpoint = 109 (unknown test) SMART self-test did not complete on drive 2!

Extended Test - Fail: 08 - Error was detected while repairing bad sectors

So next I tried to see if it was visiable in windows disk manager, and although it visiable I get a pop up screen asking to initialize the disk.

It gives me two options for the partition style. MBR and GPT

Which one should I check and will I loose the data???

Thanks

backup our data when is still time to do that… you will loose that drive… the drive disapears because it detects many bad sectors… while witing or reading the data

its is not a simple issue

Hi David,

Thank you for your help.

How do I go about backing up a drive that is not shown in my computer?

Thanks

Russ

I wouldnt know how to do that…

can anyone suggest a program that could make an image reading the entire drive???

maybe acronis true image anyone?

The WD Acronis should work if it reads the WD drive. It’s not well updated. Macrium, EaseUS, and Paragon all have free versions that should work too.
