MKV does not show up

My live box just received the latest firmware, I have 4 files in the MKV format, when I go to that folder, the wd, tell me that there are no media files in there. I’m sure there are because I could access them from my computer. I’m trying to stream blue ray movies to the box from my home server. The WD is hard wired. Any Ideas

Did you try to reset the box and “Reset To Factory Defaults” after updating?

No I did not but sure can try, also I finally did read a post that helped a bit, I was using server as my option then tried server media connect, and I at least saw a mp4 vid I made finally but still no mkv :frowning: I also tried a raw m2ts file, would not play either but my 150 regular dvd (non blue ray) have no problems.

Depending on what you’re using as the Media Server, some files just won’t play.  If you’re just using the default Windows Media Player server, then it will only stream files that WMP can play (i.e. it won’t stream .mkv).

Makes sense, so can you recommend a file solution, I want the 1080p with 5.1 or 7.1, to be able to play on woth windows media player and my wd live. I copy them with anydvd then normally put them on my home server, 8terabytes of storage there. From there my pc’s, xbox, ps3, and wd live box connect to and pull the movies, music etc. My live is hard wired into the network. My server just sends them as files, I do not use a media player on the server. Its like a over glorified NAS. I heard bad things about MP4, and MKV seemed the way to go.

This is where it gets frustrating.  Because other people have all kinds of weird issues, and I can’t replicate them.

I’ve never had any issue with .mkv files stored on my PC showing up in Network Shares… they all just play fine.  And nothing changes when I change firmware – they keep on playing fine.

But with the newer firmware updates, others are having major grief with their shares.  I believe it especially involves users who have a NAS, as opposed to Windoze sharing.

WD changed the version of Samba they use in the latest FWs, so that they can fix the bug that the Sign-In Assistant/Microsoft Essentials 2011 was causing with the Windows shares.  Is there anyway to change the version of Samba running on your NAS?

Perhaps if the Samba version the NAS is running is newer, it might play better with the version of Samba running on the WDTV.

Another option might be to add some kind of media server to the NAS that will stream your .mkv files out to your devices.

Im actually using windows home server (acer h340) all my files are stored there, and each devices links itself to home server. I think its running  windows server 2003. The mkv files I place in the server will show up on my other pc’s and play just without sound, but thats a issue for another software forum. I just cant get them to display on the wd live, I see the file folder there in but get the message there is no media in that folder. I have 6 devices, none of which have any actual data like music or photos, thats all on the server, including all my dvd’s . So far everything has been flawless till I got a hair up my but to put all my blue rays into a digital format. With my kids acting like cave men discs dont last very long in my house. This way I have one central location. I’d be willing to pay for a working solution via paypal. I have tried for 2 weeks 4 hours a night with no luck so here I am lol

I also have an acer430 homeserver and just bought a wdtv live. I do not even get the folders that contain the MKV to show up. I have no idea whay this is happening.

Because the Server you’re running won’t support that file type.

Then why does it show up on my windows 7 machine?

I don’t know, but when I find posts like:

"mkv file support has not been added to the built in media sharing in Windows Home Server.

A list of the supported file types for media sharing can be found in the techincal brief on media sharing.  I have linked it below.

I’m going to assume he knows what he’s talking about.  If he says .mkv isn’t supported (and I downloaded the Tech Brief, just to check), then I’m going to guess that .mkv isn’t supported and that’s why they’re not playing right for you, no matter where you try to stream them to.

All I see is:

Video

  • Windows Media Video (.wmv)
  • Microsoft Recorded TV Show (.dvr-ms)
  • Audio Video Interleaved (.avi)
  • MPEG-1 (.mpeg, .mpg)
  • MPEG-2 (.mp2, .mpeg, .mpg)

I found the solution, you need to access the server not through the media server but the share server then all files show up.
