Setup a share on My Cloud. Removed Public Access, locked it down to one user (my admin account).
Copied files to the new share.
Can map it with account credentials.
DNLA works better then ok (detects a few video files as songs…I can deal with the little things later…)
Plugged in My book, to My Cloud via usb3 port on back.
It automatically creates a share for it.
copied files to the externally usb mounted share.
Enabled Media Serving.
Cloud finds the files.
Both shares are viewable via my xbox one…Hooray.
But then i go back to lock down the my book share (disable public access, enable full control of admin account).
After doing so the media server looses the my book share’s media.
Doing a rescan or a rebuild out of the dashboard does not rediscover the media on the by book share.
Doing rescan or restart server in twonky setup (via gui) also does not rediscover my book share’s media.
Anyone run into this issue? I’m thinking about returning both, and getting the My cloud Duo 12TB instead, but if I can get this setup to work, that would be great!
I can’t offer a solution but I can tell you this. My 2Tb has multiple USB issues.
I was under the impression I could stream media files from a drive connected to the USB port, but even after using the aggregation settings, and seeing thousands of files, which HAVE to be from the external drive, still none of them display in my media streaming box. Pretty frustrating.
I was using a hub to connect two external drives, and they both showed up as shares, initially. Then I noticed how astoundingly slow file transfers were, so I unplugged the one I didn’t need at the time. It worked fine yesterday (but still ridiculously slow, like USB 1 speed), but I had to remap the drive on my PC. Then this morning no USB drives appear on the homepage in the dashboard, but I can still access the one through explorer. But it’s gone in the shares area, but the one that is disconnected still appears. I finally just uninstalled ALL the WD software since you done’t need any of it (I’m not using their backup software any more either) hoping that might reset something, but no. My storage capacity disappeared in the dashboard after the first day as well. And my Xbox wouldn’t find my mycloud.
I’m thinking about returning mine too, but I won’t get another WD. In fact I quit using WD in 2001 after having drives fail, and went ALL to Seagate (which are all still working). This is my first WD since, and it’s been a pretty big fail so far. It’s a great idea, but only kind of works. Tech support is no help. The guy I talked to didn’t know the USB port is 3.0 for heavens sake. How can they help you if they don’t even know the feature on the unit?
If I plug in the external drive to my MyCloud, it’s share comes to life, and its files are immediately imported into twonky without issue, and I can see/stream them from my media player (for me its an xbox 1). My only problem occurs if I try to lock down the shares permissions (disable Public, and set my admin account to full control, via the dashboard).
I’ve also submitted a service call for this to WD, but if I get no traction from there or here within my return policy date, I will return… I have no problem replacing this setup with the MyCloudMirror 12TB though, (I honestly wish I had done more research, as I didn’t know the mirror existed, as that would have been the way to go to make this much easier, as my needs are very simple (wanted DNLA abilities without hosting the files on my main PC via plex etc…). But 6TB isn’t quite enough, as my current catalog of media is only about 500GB shy of filling up the 6TB…
Maybe there is a conf file I can manually edit to get this working? Any linux guru’s out there have any ideas?
