My “My Book 3TB External Hard Drive” will not run a full backup either using WD SmartWare or the Windows Backup System.
When I plug in the External Hard Drive and try to run a backup using WD SmartWare it says the backup completed successfully, but when I compare the files on the Hard Drive to the files on my laptop it hasn’t backed up any of my new files or updated any changes.
When I plug in the External Hard Drive and try to run a backup using Windows Backup System it gets about 50% finished and then stops and a message pops up that says “Check your Backup. One of the backup files could not be created. Details: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. Error Code: 0x8078002A”.
I’ve called both Western Digital Support and Microsoft Support and nothing they’ve had me do has fixed the issue
Can someone please tell me why no matter what I do nothing will backup??? And possibly help me fix it???
What version of the WD SmartWare Backup and Drive Management Solution is the one installed on your system? On the other hand, an input/output error can result when there is a communication error due to physical issues. It could be a bad USB cable, USB port (On either the disk or the computer), or a combination.
I would recommend changing the USB cable first, and then proceed to run a full test using Western Digital Data LifeGuard Diagnostics for Windows, as instructed in the following link:
apparently seagate has a similar issue and was able to solve the problem by repartioning the drive and reformatting to a different standard. unfortunately this procedure was not made clear and I hope that WD can help with this. Windows had a problem dealing with the logical 4k sector size. There are no apparent problems with disks having a 4k physical sector size.
