My BooK (Code 1) H E L P

My WD My Book Essential has stopped working… When I connect it I get the “Installing device driver software”
message…

USB Mass Storage Device … Ready to use
WD My Book 1130 USB Device … installing driver software … and after a few mins. it says “Failed”
WD SES Device USB Device …installing driver software … and after a few mins. it says “Failed”

Then…

USB Mass storage Device … Ready to use (green tick)

Disc drive … Failed (red cross)
WD SES Device … Failed (red cross)

The disk is visible in device manager, it’s listed under “Other devices” and it says WD
SES Device USB Device and has a yellow exclamation mark… when I right click it
I only get the “Scan for hardware changes” and “Properties” options…

On properties under the general tab I get “This devices is not
configured correctly. (Code 1) To find a driver for this device, click Update
Driver.” … but there is no update driver button… under the driver tab I can
only access the “driver details” button, all the other buttons are disabled…

the disk is not visible in disk management…

im using windows 7 (64 bit)

I have two of these external WD my books and the other one works absolutely fine, instantly. I’ve tried the faulty HDD on
another PC resulting in the same problem/fault. I’ve tried different USB leads and I’ve reinstalled drivers from WD.

All my family photos from the past ten years are on here, so “HELP” would be much appreciated… thank you

Hi, see if the My Book is recognized from the disk management window. If it is, you should be able to recover your files with the help of a data recovery program. Using Google you can find several options. You can also test the My Book using DLG to verify if it has any hardware problems. Check the links below for the steps.

How to access Disk Management in Windows 7, Vista, XP or 2000 to manage your hard drives

How to test a drive for problems using Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows

Try deleting the driver for the drive and SES driver and disconnect the drive and reboot system and reconnect drive. That should load new drivers.

…and if it isn’t “recognised”?

I’m afraid nothing is displayed relating to the WD drive in the management window!

If it’s not recognized and you need to recover your files, you can contact one of the data recovery companies that WD recommends, check the link below for the steps.
