My Book for Mac suddenly stopped working

Been using My Book for Mac for about 2 years without any problem. Consistently backing up, but suddenly the back ups are failing. Information on Time Machine is saying the disk is Read Only. I’ve tried accessing the Disk through iMac Disk Utilities but it’s now not showing up. I’ve downloaded WD Disk Utilities and this can’t repair the disk. I’ve also tried it with my MacBookPro. Also replaced the cable connection. Same issue, so it’s not the Macs. Any ideas other than having to buy another external back-up disk?

Have you checked with SMART? Do you see any other symptoms like the clikcing ticking sound? If the WD is corrupt and not visible in Disk Utility then perhaps it’s gone already.

Hi Donald, you mean using WD SmartWare instead of Time Machine? I’ve downloaded it and will try later. No unusual sounds from the WD My Book for Mac. Thanks

Probably he referred to the SMART check with the WD Drive Utilities.

Also you can try to run a First Aid with Disk Utility

Yes. Check with Disk Utility also. You may also take an opinion from a free third party smart check tool like this one SMART Utility - Free download and software reviews - CNET Download
