My Book Live doesn't sleep now it is connected to my Mac mini

Hi

I was wondering if someone could provide me a clear answer to my non-sleeping MBL issue.

I recently purchased a Mac Mini which recognises my MBL (3tb), adds it to shared in finder and mounts it. Previously I used a Windows 7 laptop and all was fine, the MBL would sleep when the laptop was on without a problem and only woke when files were accessed. Since adding the Mac to the network it won’t sleep - 3days. I have since unmounted the drive and it will sleep however when I use a programme that has files saved to the MBL via the Mac the file will not run. (For example I have movies on the MBL which I use Plex to access via the MAC, Plex cannot find the file to play) On windows this was never a problem. I do keep my Mac on permanently and I’d like to use Plex on the go and ideally would like to use the MBL for a timemachine backup. I’m assuming a timemachine backup would require the drive to be mounted permanently?

Can anyone give me an answer if this is something I just have to deal with - i.e… Never sleeping with a Mac or  if there is a quick fix.

Thanks

Hi, an application on the Mac, might be trying to access the my book, to be sure disconnect the my book from the Mac and check if the problem continues. Also be sure to have the latest firmware update installed.

Hi

When i unmount the drive the problem is solved. Does that mean by just having the drive mounted that the Mac is using the drive?

I assumed it would only wake the MBL as and when an app uses it - for example i have my plex server to check for updates to file every 6 hours. I was expecting the MBL to wake every 6hours only.

I guess another application might be doing it.

so just by having it mounted shouldn’t stop the MBL from sleeping?

Do you have an idea how I could find out what app is accessing it?

No, but you can try using the activity monitor to see what programs are running in the background.
