My Book Live to My Book

I have a my book live connected via ethernet to my cisco router, I store my music for my sonos system on it and all works well.  I want to start to back it up.  I have a mybook that I can connect via usb to the cisco router, I have removed security from the my book so i can see it from the router but when I try and set up a safepoint but the my book live can’t see the my book.  Any ideas what I can do besides buy more hardware?  I am currently copying my music via wifi to my laptop, which I will then copy to the my book to make a backup but this is a PITA.

Any help greatly appreciated

Hi, welcome to the community.

As far as I remember the My Book Live can only do a safepoint to another MBL or My Cloud drive. However this is what I remember I might be wrong.

Your MBL doesn’t have a USB port itself does it?  I think that is limited to only MBLD.  Anyways, you can do the transfer with the setup you have, though it takes a bit of linux knowledge.

YOu need to SSH into the MBL and then mount the MyBook onto the MBL.

here are insturctions for a prior genration of mybooklive, so you can get the idea.  though you will need to modify it for the MBL a bit

As far as I know, any “network share” will work. It is also mentioned on manual. However, there are no more specifcs.

I do not have safepoint setup, but a quick discovery action does find the network shares on my Win machine.

Standard usage usually is:

  • PCs/laptops/etc have the original files

  • MBL is the backup device

But anything pretty much goes, it all depends on your needs, $$$, technical expertise, etc…
