I was backing up with it yesterday… but then moved it from a hub to a port on my desktop to speed things up. Now I can’t see it on either windows or through the UI. I have another one that is working fine, so all network seems ok. The unit has the green lights on and seems to be sending data fine… humming along fine. Just can’t get to it. Any software out there to reach it? I also did the reset… no luck.
If disk manager can’t see it, I don’t know what the issue would be.
If it can see it, assign it a drive letter from there.
I think you need to clarify this a bit.
You refer to a My Book (which is a USB-attached device). But you say “no USB” and posted this on a My Book Live forum so I’m going to assume this is an Ethernet-attached My Book Live device so the hub you refer to is an Ethernet hub, not a USB hub. Yes?
Knowing your configuration might help use understand this,. Was the hub (that you moved from) attached to a router? If so, Windows is trying to assign you an IP address on a different subnet. That would not be a problem unless you had given your device a static IP address.
Can you reach the device if you put it back on the hub?
Off topic, but why would moving the device off a hub speed things up? Do you have a lot of devices with high volume traffic on that hub? If so, you might be better served to replace the hub with a switch rather than moving your device off it. But I suspect neither action would cause much difference.
Nothing can see it… Moved it to another computer…different ethernet port…changed the cable…hit the reset… Nothing…
Thanks for the reply
Yes… this is an older model… 0030HH-00 which only has the ability to connect with an Ethernet port. It has been IP address 172.31.10.93 (also named WDLive1) for some time. I believe I use dynamic IP addressing throughout, but my other WD2 Live book continues to keep it’s IP address of 172.31.10.211, so maybe they are static.
The hub is connected to a router. It had both the My Live Books hooked to it. That is the only thing on the hub. All other traffic is plugged into the router directly. The WD2 is there and still working fine.
It was only transferring about 4M so I moved it to an Ethernet port on my desktop unit and the rate went up to about 30M.
Not sure when I lost the connection…
I have transferred it back to the hub, but it still will not recognize it.
Sorry, Terri – I had my mind on a USB drive, not a My Book Live.
If you did “the reset” on the My Book Live, it’s now using dynamic addressing. So you can’t find its IP address in your router’s DHCP table?
Also, depending on which reset you did, it could have changed its name back to the default of MYBOOKLIVE instead of WD1.
You might be able to find it using the WD Net View Software (http://downloads.wdc.com/wdapp/MyNetViewFull_1_0_12_0.zip)
Not being seen after being moved back to the hub is not a good sign. (I bet you figured that one out on your own.)
Your comment about speeds tells a few things:
- Your drive worked for a while when directly connected to the computer.
- Your computer must have multiple network adapters
- You probably have a lower speed hub than your computer’s network adapters.
But none of that clears things up much.
As Tony suggested, check if your router sees the problematic drive when it’s plugged into the hub or directly into the router. If not, but the Ethernet adapter light show activity, then something is probably wrong inside the device. And I would think the reset would have cleared up any software problems.
I’ll give the software a try… thanks…
