Hello,

Does the My Book Essential USB 2.0 / 3.0 require the power adapter when connected to a USB 3.0 PCI-e card?

ALL MyBooks need the power adapter connected in order to get power.

Passports on the other hand, feed from your computer.

USB powered drives frequently have the subfix SE  like Passport SE or Elements SE. If they come with a power adapter you need it to use drive.

Thanks for the swift reply. It wasn’t clear from the product information, nor did I find a definite answer in any reviews.

So even the USB 3.0 extra power isn’t enough for the 3.5 inch hard drives.

3.5" Drives needs 12V  power, but USB is only 5V
