My Cloud EX2 Ultra backup to USB failing

Hi everyone,

I’ve been using the USB backup function of my My Cloud EX2 Ultra for quite a while now but just recently it started to fail and now I can no longer backup to USB at all. Whenever I now try to start a backup, it will try to backup my files for a while and then it would just give an error and tell me to check my system settings. There are no logfiles I can check, no further information, nothing, so how am I supposed to fix this problem!?
Is this a common issue with the EX2 Ultra? What could be the reason for this problem and how can I get the backup running again?

Hi,

You could refer to the following link: My Cloud: USB Copy, Synchronize and Incremental Backup Failure

Is the USB external drive FULL ? There is also more than one port is ( usb drive ) going to the correct one

set extended log setting may give more info

try a new external usb Mybook back up unit

No, it is ~25% full. I am always using the same USB port for the backup so that can’t be the reason. I also just enabled extended logging so I’ll see if I can get any additional info from that.

Check the messages again in the job details when it fails. I do not remember log or notification messages when I had the usb full error.

you might try making an additional backup task ( create job ) and not changing the old one.
and/or a create job using the other USB port

BUT remove the backup USB drive and test with another USB disk.
A large flash disk may even work for testing

The files on the backup disk may still be ok

  1. Create a job will auto start backup after making one - learned that the hard way.

  2. click on the network icon in the blue ribbon then the right pointing arrow -may give more backup disk information ( the eject tab is on the left )

  3. once I found a lot of extra files and sub folders on my USB backup and has to reformat and make a new backup

4, The USB backup disk has always been readable remotely and when attached via usb to my PC

  1. I have only done backups with the Sync option selected and using latest firmware.

  2. I may have formatter USB as exFAT / we have several WD nas unit type here for Mac and Windows PC.

I checked the messages but there was absolutely nothing useful logged at all regarding the backup. I also do not have any other USB drive for testing. What else can I try? Would formatting the drive and trying to run a new backup again be worth trying? I also noticed that only trying to backup with the Sync option fails but using “Copy” instead works for some reason.

copy working may be a good clue

  1. After doing a Sync USB backup job and is fails click the job detail button to the right of the trash can icon ( when i had my error to the USB drive - That was the only error message message that helped )

  2. You can test a new SYNC job in the other USB port using even a common Flash memory stick formatted to FAT32

I just tested that - need to wait tell the NAS sees the flash memory drive then you can click USB icon on the top page to see it is attached. make a new job and test

  • the size of the flash drive will limit the number of files, ( I used the timemachinebackup ) as it was empty for my testing.
  1. you can directly view and change the the files on the BACKUP USB disk via logging in to the nas
  • the directory may be bad or a corrupted file - you may be able to see and fix small problems.

Do not change the directory layout on the USB

something to try before having to reformat and clear the backup USB disk

Good luck on testing - We do not want you to lose any files
