My Cloud keeps forgetting share setting

I try to set up share access privilege but it seems that My Cloud does not remember it.

I have created a share folder named “Expansion-2”, as the first screenshot.

Then I change its access status from “Public” to “non Public” and assign two users with different access privilege. After two prompting messages saying “Updating”, it shows as the second screenshot.

Then I visit any other page, like “Home” or “Settings”, and come back to the “Shares” page. It forgets everything and shows exactly like the first screenshot. My Cloud forgets what I was telling it.

I’ve tried many times and still cannot find a way to let My Cloud accept this simple setting. The firmware version is 2.31.204, the most up-to-date. It’s internal hard disk has enough space.

Thank you.

First, check the error messages that are indicated by the Yellow Bell icon at the top of your My Cloud Dashboard. That yellow icon indicates some sort of warning or notification error message. Review them to see if any deal with your USB drive.

Second, you may want to check the name of the USB drive, rename it, and avoid using special characters or numbering in that name. In the past when a My Cloud device has trouble with a USB drive, it will append a number to the drive name each time the drive is attached to the My Cloud. This causes various problems including the problem you are experiencing. One may, as a troubleshooting step, remove all partitions on that USB drive and re-partition it with a single drive partition and reformat it to a My Cloud supported format (NTFS for example).

Hi Bennor,

Thank you for the suggestions. The yellow bell icon shows some warnings like power loss but nothing with the USB drive. I’m pretty sure the USB drive is correctly mounted, as I can read and write content if I SSH into My Cloud. The USB drive is formatted with HPS+ file system, which is supported by My Cloud as the WD document says.

I also tried renaming the drive, but encountered the same problem: My Cloud didn’t accept the renaming, and always reverted it to the original name. It is less likely a problem of characters, because its name is a default name with letters, hyphen and number, given by My Cloud. And because the name is correctly shown and used when I SSH into My Cloud.

@oraclegeneral What do you mean by USB drive? If you have a WD MY CLOUD and have connected another device by using the USB connection have you looked at the User Manual to see what you can do with a USB device once it is connected? See Chapter 12.

If you haven’t done so already as a troubleshooting step, try formatting the drive in a different format. Like NTFS.

When the My Cloud gives a “- #” (ex. -1, -2, -3) to a drive name that usually means there is a previous entry for that drive in the database the My Cloud uses for storing information about USB drives that are attached to the My Cloud. Often when this happens there ends up being additional Shares listed for that USB drive in the My Cloud Dashboard > Shares tab. One potential fix when this happens is to unmount the USB drive using the USB unmount option in the My Cloud Dashboard and disconnect the USB drive once unmounted. Then while still in the Dashboard, access the Shares tab and remove any Share names that feature the name of the USB drive with a dash and number. Then reattach the USB drive and see if it adds a dash and a number to the USB drive name.

On a side note, because the My Cloud uses Linux for it’s OS it gets a bit picky on special characters being used for; drive, share, folder, and file names. For example if using a period to start a folder name Linux may consider the folder a hidden folder and not show it properly.

You’re right the USB disk was once connected to this My Cloud and worked well. Then I moved it to another NAS and recently moved back. Perhaps that’s why My Cloud named it with “-2”.

Thank you for the suggestion. I unmounted the usb disk in the dashboard and deleted its share folder on the “Shares” page while it was still there. Then I disconnected it and reconnected it. Again My Cloud recognized it as “Expansion-2”. I changed its name and / or access privilege, but again My Cloud forgot the change.

Thank you for your patience and advice. I’ve decided to give it up, and moved this usb disk to another NAS instead.
