My Cloud not seen on SmartWare Windows 7 Home Premium

Tried uninstalling and reinstalling SmartWare, turned off firewall in Norton, checked that network discovery was enabled, etc. If I enter \IPaddressofmycloud, it shows up in my network. Not super techy and could use some help. I understand that I’m not the only one having a problem with this. I installed QuickView, but I can’t seem to get it to run. Any help?

QuickView is just a tray icon tool. Right click on it, does it see the My Cloud?  Did you download the latest version of Smartware?

Yes, I uninstalled/reinstalled SmartWare this morning. I see now, QuickView is a shortcut to SmartWare. When I right click on QuickView, it doesn’t show MyCloud, but gives me 3 options, about/open SmartWare/ and exit(i think). What’s interesting is MyCloud doesn’t show in my network, but when I enter \MyCloudIPaddress in the start bar, a new window pops up with the previous network devices AND the MyCloud(IP address displayed). I am also able to see all of the files on MyCloud. I also turned off the firewall completely to no avail. Thanks for your input.

Did you try turning on network discovery?  (Network and Sharing Center > Advanced sharing settings in Windows 7)

Yes, that’s on. I can see the WD in my attached network devices(along with my Mac,TV,Xbox, etc.) but it doesn’t show in my network. Just the PC and Mac show up. Does my network device need to have sharing enabled or something? The one on the PC that I’m using to connect to the internet I mean.

Can you tell me your network layout and how everything is connected?  How are you trying to access the Wd My cloud?

Sure. PC in question is connected via cat5e cable to cat5 jack on the second floor… This heads to the basement, and is connected via a Dlink ethernet switch to the Airport Extreme AC base station which is on the main level… The WD My Cloud is plugged into the base station on the main level. Is this what you meant?

Hmmm, it might have something to do with the Airport Extreme.  WD SmartWare uses UPNP for device discovery which I dont Airport Extreme supports.  As a quick test, plug the WD My Cloud into the Dlink switch and unplug the switch from the router.  SmartWare should be able to pick up the My Cloud.

Ok. I’ll try that tomorrow morning and report back. Weird thing is, the Mac sees the MyCloud just fine and backs up via Time Machine to it. Although, Mac plays nice with the AirPort Extreme, and SmartWare might not. On a side note, cloud access is working, although it’s in relay mode. I haven’t had any luck with port forwarding. Absolutely love this router, and absolutely hate its lack of versatility.

Dude, you’re a rockstar! I brought the MyCloud upstairs and plugged it into the ethernet jack(basically the same as plugging it into the ethernet switch in the basement). I checked on the Mac and could see it and work with it. I then went to the PC, opened SmartWare, and BAM…there it was. I am backing up to it now. It was hiding behind the Airport Extreme all the while. Thanks so much for taking the time to help me work through the problem. I’m a happy camper!

No problem, glad everything is working for you :) Also, I don’t think there’s much of a difference in my opinion on it being relayed or port forwareded as long as it works.  I dont see much of a speed difference.

Yeah, I’ve pretty much given up on that. It works just fine the way it is. Thanks again. As far as the backup goes,13gb down, 117 to go. haha

Just bought WAD mycloud 3TB - unfortunately also have the problem of smartware not reading mycloud.“Backup” and “Retrieve” buttons are shaded out.

Downloaded WD Discovery - no luck.

Uninstalled all WD software and re-installed - twice.

Spent over 8 hours - trying to find a solution.

Running Windows 7 and use Norton 360 -  Anybody got any ideas?
