My Music Can't be Seen Anymore

Hi, I have a little problem… obviously. I have Windows 7 serving up my videos, music and pictures to the WD Live. It was all working flawless. I recently upgraded the firmware to 1.07.15 (or whatever the latest is). Sometime after doing so, the WD Live no longer saw my music library. It just says, “No media found in the folder”. My pictures and videos work perfect, so its not the network connection and I didn’t change any settings on Windows 7.

My first attempt at fixing the problem was a hard reset by pulling the power and rebooting. That didn’t work. I tried to rebuild the media library on the WD Live. That didn’t work. I reset the WD Live to factory defaults. That didn’t work. I rolled back the firmware to the previous verseion 1.06.whatever. That didn’t work.

So, my conclusion is that the problem is not the network, wireless by the way; not the firmware, not any setting on the WD Live or Windows 7. Is there anything else that could be causeing this? Im curious why the music suddenly dissapeared after it had always worked so well, and why only the music won’t work and the videos and pictures still work perfectly?

Also, all the music is MP3 and maybe some WMA. I was reading about some bug where filenames with unrecognized characters will corrupt the library on WD Live, but it had always worked before; so I don’t think that is the problem.

Ok, 2 other small things that are unrealated in case anyone knows. Even when I add files, music, pictures or videos; it always says “0 new” on the menu of the WD Live. Shouldn’t it tell me how many new files were added to the library. It has been that way ever since I got the WD Live.

The other thing is the dashboard. The dashboard never worked either since I got the WD Live. It always just told me to connect to a media source and enable Media Library, both of wich I had always had. When I rolled the firmware back to 1.06.whatever, the dashboard suddenly started working. Since rolling back didn’t solve the Music issue, I reinstalled and upgraded back to firmware 1.07.15. After doing that, the dashboard no longer works again. Any idea why?

Thanks, sorry that was so long.

Since the issues started to occur after you updated to 1.07.15, I recommend you to roll back the firmware to an earlier version, then Reset All Settings to Factory Defaults, by the Sysytem menu.

Try that round the other way - reset to factory defaults via the internal menu and if that does not work you can always rollback the firmware to see if that helps.

Thanks. I have tried each of those individually, but not together. I will try it when I get a chance and report back.

Hey guys, thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately those things didn’t work either. I even got one of those programs that renames all your music files based on their tag, just to make sure it wasn’t an issue with invalid characters in the file name I had read about somewhere in these forums. It’s a complete mystery to me.

One other thing, I tried getting to me music by using the Files menu. I set the media source to my media library, but when I went to the music files, it told me “No media content in folder”. Again, photos and videos were flawless.

If anyone has any other ideas, I’m all ears… or eyes rather. Could it be something in Widows 7 and not the WD Live at all?

couple ideas maybe…

Can you see your music files from another computer?  it seems really strange that neither the library or the files show up from the WDTV.  if other computers can’t see your share, then the WDTV won’t either.  at least it would narrow it down if the issue is how they are shared, or the WDTV not seeing them.

Also, Perhaps in Windows 7 go and right click on one of your music files, select properties, and see if  an attribute has somehow gotten set to “hidden” ?

hope this helps

Thanks, I will try that when I get home. Unfortunately, I only have one computer. I’m goint to start focusing on settings with Windows 7 Homegroup and the music files themselves. I seem to remember that last thing I did was add the album No Quarter from Page and Plant. I had listened to a couple of songs. It was some time after that when I came back and it would no longer read the music. I had also upgraded the firmware to 1.07.15 prior to that, but was using the new firmware when I was listening to the music.

I was also thinking of removing the WD Live from the homegroup and then re-adding it. Maybe that will reset something that got corrupted. I will get to the bottom of this and report back as I try new things.
