My old WD20EARS working even though the computer aren't doing anything (is it about to give up?)

I don’t know if my WD20EARS is about to die. It’s Power On hours just past 12000 and Load and Unload count is around 115000 cycles.

When idling on desktop the drive seems to be working even though there aren’t any activity. I’ve checked with Process Explorer and task manager running Windows 8. Zero activity and the disc is spinning since i’ve choosed “Turn of hard disc after” to “Never” in Power Options, but the arm seem to be working too for some reason. I’ve even went through a Extended Test with Western Digital Diagnostics and it went through fine.

I hear some ticking sounds and if i rest my finger on it i feel the ticking.

What’s happening? Should i be worried?

Hello,

There are many variables that could amount to a drive emitting unusual sounds when powered on. However, it does not mean that the drive is about to fail.

Please check the link below

How to tell if the noise or sound the drive is making is normal

Thanks for the reply!

“Occasional clicks during data access”

Well i hear clicks from it even though when i removed the sata-cable and the drive is vibrating much more than my other drive which is the same model. It isn’t the mounting since i’ve checked and tried it in other places.

Thanks!
