My Passport (750gb) no onger working

Hi All,

I have read a few posts simular to my situation but the solution provided in those posts dont seem to apply to me so I thought I would start a new post.

I have had MyPassport for over a year now and it was working perfectly, very easy to use (which is good for someone like me who has little computing knowledge). HOWEVER, yesterday while watching a video the passport stopped working. Initially I thought I might have accidently shaken the cable which caused it to disconnect but when I reconnected the cable it wasn’t registering with my computer anymore (as if it wasn’t plugged in).

When i connect the cable to the PC the light indicators turns on (and remains on) for about 30seconds then starts flashing quite quickly. I can not hear any beeping sounds.

I have tried using different cables and computers/laptops but the drive wont ‘pop up’ like it did before.

Reading the other post, I have NOT dropped it or damaged it in anyway, I went into DISK MANAGEMENT and

all I can see is my internal hard and CD Rom drive. I went into WD smart drive and can only see my C: drive/internal drive.

Can anyone please help.

Thanks in advance

Hades

Go to device manager to See if the drive is at least in there

Right Cilck in My computer / Computer > manage >Device manager , under disk Drives or usb Serial bus Controllers

If It is NOT Even in there , then i Will Suggest you to replace the drive :open_mouth:

Already done and not apeearing

Well if WD devices break down after a year then its the last time I purchase a WD device.

Any1 recommend something that will last?

Same issue as everyone else, it seems:

Passport 300GB external hard drive that has worked flawlessly for oh, 8-10 months, light is solid blue until I unlock it with password but then the Light flashes quickly and disc does not show up in My Computer.  I’m running XP.

I can see it in Device Manager and in Disk Management, but cannot see any of the files.  Disk management seems to indicate that the drive is healthy, but empty.  Sometimes I get a “would you like to format the drive” message, but I see nothing of the 60+ GB of data that exists on the drive.  Did the drive get magically reformatted somehow?

This report looks okay, based on the comparisons I’ve seen in the thread so far:

So, any thoughts?  I’d be surprised if it’s power supply since we’ve been using it for so long without a problem.  Seems like it just up and kicked the bucket.

I have the exactly the SAME Issue with my 750GB My Passport 070A.  :frowning: :frowning:

I have loads of important data on it. And most of it the ONLY copy. :frowning:

Can anyone help?? Is it a cable problem or the HD has simply gone! Do I need to go for data-recovery… .can it be done?

I have the same problems with the same 750gb passport drive. I have tried everything from different WD cables, PC’s, rescans and cannot get it to connect. My bet is the internal usb component has failed? Is there any way to recover the data? Can it be successfully restored by recovery software/experts or am I wasting my time? Is there anything else I can try as it seems to be a common issue with these drives and is extremely frustrating… I have the new style drive, the activity light does come on and the drive does spin up. Any help appreciated, thanks in advance.

It can probably be recovered but it will be expensive.

Joe

Thanks for the reply Joe

Does anyone know if you can swap out the usb interface on these drives with another one (even swap the whole PCB board?) I am prepared to sacrifice a new 750gb usb drive to get the old one working. I have not used any encryption etc. Any other options/ideas guys have tried to get their data back from these drives?

Thanks.
