Hello,

I recommend you try these troubleshooting steps.

1- Disconnect the drive from the computer and restart the computer.

2- If the computer is a desktop, connect it on the back USB port (directly to the PC, not through a hub).

3- Make sure you hear the connection sound windows makes when recognizes a USB device.

4- Go to "Disk Management” to verify if the drive shows up there.

If the drive shows up in Disk Management but it is not seen on Computer, then it means the partition is corrupted and you will have to format it in order to use it again. Please note that formatting the drive will delete all data stored on it.

Thanks for your answer.

The My Passport drive is correctly connected to the computer, I can access it with the explorer, the WD Backup software copys data from PC drive C:\User to the unit.

I have two My Passport drives. One is connected to the PC and here I can setup the files to be saved. See picture:

The other drive is connected to my laptop, and here I can not see the drives of the laptop:

On the PC W7 Professional is running, on the Laptop W7 Home Premium. Could that cause the problem?

Any hints available ??

I had the same problem with WD My Passport Ultra 2 TB external drive and windows 10 system.
That is, I could not choose any drive of directory under My Computer in the WD Backup software. I called WD support but the gentleman that was helping me did not even know or heard about such an issue. He was insisting that I should see them under My Computer.

I had to, eventually, delete all WD software that came with this 2 TB drive (including WD Backup) and restored Windows to an earlier date where I had software from another WD Passport Ultra (500 GB) which proppagated from windows 8 installation to windows 10 and had WD Smartware Pro on it.

I am now running WD Smartware Pro which allows me to choose any directory I want or any internal disk I want (some displays in it cluttered like GENERICTAB) Apparantly WD Smartware was not meant to run with windows 10 either.

It is funny that 2 TB drive has windows 10 checkmark on it yet the user manual for WD Backup that came with the drive talks only about windows 7 and 8. Apparantly WD BACKUP sofware has a problem with some windows versions including windows 10.
I hope I don’t run into other problems when time comes to restore files.

Thanks for your info. I shall try to install the WD software from my first My Passport ultra device
