MyBook not detected by computer

Hi, 

I purchased a WD external harddrive  a couple of months ago, it hasn’t been used but doesn’t seem to be registered by my computer usb port- i.e. nothing comes up when i insert the drive on either my usb or the face panel of the harddrive. I’ve checked the usb port, the power supply and the connections and all seem to be fine. Would anyone be able to help me with a solution?

Try going to disk management and see if the drive shows there.

You might be able to format or change the drive letter.

Tried this.  But under Disk Management, it asked me to format the external drive first before it can assign a drive letter to it.  I cannot format becuase I need data contained on the external drive.  Any other solutions?

Recover the data with a software and then reformat. 

Just google data recovery software.
