I’ve got a 2Tb Mybooklive network drive and it is so slow! It was connected to my DSL modem but in an attempt to speed thing up it is now attached to my 2015 iMac running Siera 10.12.2 with an 2.8Ghz i5 and 16Gb of RAM directly through a Cat5e ethernet cable to the iMac. It takes several minutes just to connect to the drive and to read the content of folders also takes minutes rather than seconds. As for data transfer, it is so slow that I can only transfer small amounts of data at a time otherwise I get time-outs. This was originally meant for a backup drive but it is far to slow for any backup software to deal with.
Has anyone any suggestions as to what might be wrong?
It could be an early sign of hardware degradation, or an internal issue related to unit’s OS. I’d recommend replacing the Ethernet cable, then rebooting the NAS in the unit’s Dashboard (Settings> Utilities> Device Reboot). Afterwards, a diagnostic test should follow under Settings> Utilities> Diagnostics.
If the unit passes the test then try a factory reset. It will delete all data but will allow for the unit’s OS to function properly. If it fails the test it should be replaced.
I’ve tried all of these things suggested and nothing has worked, however, last night I came across an old Cat5 cable from my distant past. I plugged the drive in using it and hey-presto it works like magic! Not the quickest drive in the world but usable. The Odd thing is that I have tried no less than three new Cat5e cables without any improvement yet an ancient (and I mean about 25 years old) cable does the trick, maybe its just a quality of cable issue because I was under the impression that a Cat5e was superior to a Cat5 cable. Maybe I should hunt out a decent Cat6 now.
