MyBookWorld WhiteLight connection to OS X El Capitan / High Sierra fails

Hi,
I have a WD-MyBookWorld that I use as a backup for my iMac (under OS X El Capitan up to today, and fails under HighSierra, too).
I can connect to it through smb:// and via ssh
I see it in TimeMachine and listed under the bonjour shares, but the connection fails.
Through the web interface I checked that the firmware is the latest.

Any help is appreciated
