MyCloud 3TB iTunes Server video

I have placed some m4v videos on my 3TB MyCloud (updated firmware, 3.01.03-127), in the /Public/Shared Videos/ directory (but not under mirrored/ or uploaded/), and I can see the files when I mount the network share. However, they do not show when remotely accessing the device via iTunes on Mac (10.8.5/11.1.1) — all I see is an empty library. The iTunes server is on, I have forced scan for content, media streaming is on, I have manually rescanned the database. The DLNA server indicates that it is aware of these videos and I can view them with VLC. Any ideas what could be wrong?

Thanks

The iTunes Server does not support video. This should be documented in the manual.

If that is indeed the case, you need to  correct the manual…for example, page 4 says:

 — quote —

Serve up your music with iTunes® – WD My Cloud includes iTunes support so you can
centralize your music and video collection and play it on any PC or Mac computer with
iTunes.

 — quote —

(Although, to be fair, page 97 only mentions music, and page 98 does say that iTunes > 10.4 supports only music.)

Anyway, please consider allowing video streaming in iTunes as well.

Thanks

I was planning on buying a NAS device in order to stream media to itunes or vlc player on both family iPads and computers.  WD My Cloud looks promising and maybe a better option than Seagate’s Central NAS but…

Are you saying that there is no support for video streaming either over a home network or remotely?

If so that would be a sticking point for me.

thanks in advance for the info.

It will stream video to ipads via the free WD2Go app as long as they are in mp4 or m4v format. if you want to use other formats eg avi, vob or mkv,  you will need third party software like Media Connect and will have to pay extra for the licence for the decoders.

Your pc or mac will simply read the folder so will play any compatible file. VLC is the most versatile…and free

NO way!  :)

There are numerous ways to support video playback on the Cloud.   Twonky DLNA is included, of course it also supports NFS / AFP and CIFS (SMB) file shares, and then there’s WD My Cloud app for Android and iOS devices, etc. etc.

I agree with angelos…  The summary pages he refer to ARE a bit misleading WRT iTunes capability…

I know of no NAS on the market that supports iTunes video streaming. Apple provides video streaming via its iTunes app on PC or Mac.

ANY NAS that uses forked-daapd iTunes server supports video streaming, including all WD NASes. My understanding is that Apple changed iTunes CLIENT software in some 10.x version so that IT no longer supports it.

Yes, that’s what I meant. Apple only allows streaming from their iTunes.
