MyCloud 4TB disconnects from network

Hi All, I’m new here so please excuse the newbie question. I’ve searched already and found loads of similiar posts about the constant disconnects from the network, but after reading so many views and opinions I am not sure what to do.

In summary, bought the 4TB MyCloud recently and have had it since mid April 2014, so roughly just over a week. I’ve read posts as far back as last November and promises of firmware updates, and other suggestions about static IP addresses and all sorts of technical confusing things

I’m running Windows 7 and my router is a trusty old SMC 7904WBRA. During the course of the week I’ve copied about 2.5TB of data to my MyCloud as I had a few older HDD and wanted to centralize the content.

After reading all the related posts I’m actually copying some content back as I might want to return this device…sad though!

I am running the latest firmware: v03.04.01-219.

I’m getting almost daily disconnects when I can’t access the device from the dashboard or Explorer. The only remedy is to pull out the power cable, wait a few secs and then plug it back in…viola it appears on my network again. Btw, I have also disabled ‘sleep mode’.

So, any ideas for a non-techie guys? I read about SSH into the device and setting up cron jobs but am totally lost. I don’t even know how to assign a static IP address “outside the range” as I think I’ve read in previous posts.

My issue is why should I have to do all of those things when I purchased this device in good faith, expecting to just plug it in, connect via cable to my router and it should work. All my older external HDDs are WD so I’ve come to trust the brand, however, if I had read those previous threads I would have stayed well clear of this MyCloud device.

In previous threads I’ve also seen WD staff comment about fixes in “latest” firmware releases from January already, yet many threads have been closed without us being any closer to the answer.

Is there any way someone could just create ONE thread with a good summary of what to try, and even WD staff can give us updates, instead of promising “the next firmware release…”…“the next one…”, etc.

Many thanks and again, apologies for posting what I’m sure has been discussed to death!

Mine is doing the same thing. It only started doing it this week so I’m wondering if it’s something wrong with WD online.

It is happening to me also for the same product.

Something is very wrong here.

It is useless like this.

I post a fault at WD and wait their reply.

Hi All

I have the same device with the same issues, anyone got a solution i would love to know the details, only had the item 5 days, going back for a refund soon i think… which is a shame as when it is connected it is a nice piece of kit.

WD get your act together, these items are not cheap and expecting them to work is not asking too much…

Why don’t you open a case with WD Tech Support instead of looking for an answer from other customers. You’ve only had the unit for less than 30 days and WD offers free phone support during the first 30 days. Isn’t that the best choice to find an answer? I’d think so.

just a thought. you probably did it already. Make sure you have a static IP address, disconnect all devices. wireless, except your pc mycloud, then wait and see what happens.

I had a similar issue with different device. My PC will just disconnects and router will stop reconnecting and had to reboot again. It baffled me for weeks and guess what? it was the USB camera. Why? who knows. Could be a bad driver. I am not saying this is it, just a thought.

That’s a good suggestion. Assigning static IP for the My Cloud very likely would resolve the frequent network disconnect issue. The specific steps will vary based on one’s router but in general you would need to login to your router’s web based management interface and look for static IP configuration and there you would assign your device a fixed IP (router will tie it to your My Cloud’s fixed MAC address so it won’t change again).

Even though mine is a 2TB, I am also experiencing many disconnects since the latest firmware update.  I have had to enable FTP and somehow that is allowing me to maintain a semi stable connection.  Had to delete any mapped shares I had, which is fine for me personally since I am the only user of this, like you I was wanting to centralize my storeage.

I really hope that WD is reading these posrts and looking into the disconnection issue.  Odd though, it is not recording anything in the logs, or the alerts.

I should also add that I NEVER allow dhcp on any devices that are permanent on my network.  I only allow DHCP on my tablets and cell phones.  My laptops, and desktops are all static outside of the DHCP range.

Just an update…no disconnects since I posted and that was on Saturday…touch wood!

The only ‘difference’ I can say is that I installed ‘WD Quick View’ and perhaps it is keeping a connection to the device as every time I hover my mouse over it, it displays the drive status, capacity and if the temp is ok.

Even then, I highly recommend assigning a static IP to your My Cloud on your router as someone suggested. It won’t hurt, if anything will probably help.

I have a static IP but also experienced some disconnects.

Assign a fixed IP address outside of the range of IP addresses in the DHCP settings of your router.

Actually, if you assign a static IP on your router that is within the router’s DHCP range, you’ll be fine - the router knows to reserve that IP for the assigned device and will not dle it out to another device. At lease my router does. Most routers should behave the same way, but YMMV.

samsung tv dlna intermittently disconnects from Mycloud 4TB

I have tried doing all but it mycloud disconnet from samsung TV every 10-15 mins or 40 mins. I have Dlink router in between. Not single media, movie is complete watchable. I just bought this 2 months back.

I have done all needed seeting for mycloud.

I disabled ‘Hard disk sleep’ within the dashboard (settings –> system –> energy saver), and also disabled ‘Restart on NIC changes’ under the network settings on the Twonky configuration page (to get to Twonky config page, go to <MBL ip address>:9000/config).

set media receiver type etc.

All have been tried nothing seems to work.

WDmycloud is not working as mentioned by company. is WD looking into. COME UP WITH FIX!!!:confounded:

Is your TV connected to the router through a wired connection or a wireless connection?

We are now looking into this.

Another user reported that assigning a fixed IP address to the TV as well fixed some intermittent disconnections.

Same here: http://community.wd.com/t5/WD-My-Cloud/WD-My-Cloud-urgent-firmware-issue/m-p/733258 I did 2 times plug off and then plug power cord back. It hurts me to do it. But no other way during disconnect it hangs and only stil blue led. No way to restart. 4 second clicking restart button doesn’t help also.

Any news from WD Guys ?

I just bought a "TD device 2 weeks ago and started t have the disconnects problem…I can´t believe that the only solution posted was one froma  customer that mentions to use a crontab…is incredible.

Is WD going to assume the problem andmake any formal announcement ?

I cant use a device that i need to reboot every day !!!
