MYCLOUD administrator not on the network

Hi

I saw back in 2014 someone asked this question -

If I am not on my local network that has the MYCLOUD 8, how do I run the ADMIN so that I can alter USERS, change SHARES etc??

OR is this still not possible after all these years?
This is a fundamental issue with any network administrator - right?

Officially you cannot access the My Cloud Dashboard remotely by directly connecting to a remote My Cloud.

Unofficially if you either hacked the firmware (using SSH) or used VPN to access the local network where the My Cloud is hosted it may be possible to access the Dashboard remotely.

You still can’t.

Not for a small office/home office/consumer product, no. The need to do remote administration is really only essential for enterprise-level NAS. Which the basic MyCloud is not.

Sometimes, it’s a pain when you’re away from home, and you’d like to add a user, or re-boot the Cloud Access (because your router has rebooted and now has a new IP address allocated by your ISP’s DHCP server). You have to decide how much of a pain it is, and how much you are prepared to pay to avoid that pain, and have 24/7 remote admin access.

Remote admin access comes with security issues…

Thanks for the update.
I am a small office.
I happen to be out away for a period of time and I have a need to create a share so that someone can access my server.

There must be something that is possible. there are many remote tools for access and remoting into ones home is not unusual.

What are you suggesting I need? In this age of wireless and remote everything - I think MYCLOUD needs to have a few more features.

There must be some workaround? Is there an app I can load on the storage device?

Thanks for that.

I guess the VPN would go to a PC on the local network there and from
there, access the MYCLOUD

The SSH hack would be something that I would do while locally connected.
Then the port etc could be open for access. Any info on this one?
Thanks
Dave

Some routers have a built in VPN option, I know I can connect to the VPN on my asus router and then access the WD as though I was connected on my PC normally from my phone.

Thank you for the info, I will check that out when I return. I do have a
PC right now that I have used in the past to remote into the network
with Chrome Remote
