MyCloud intermittently and transiently unavailable for files

I have a MyCloud 4Tb with no external drives. I use it mainly for backup from a number of computers but I want Cloud access to the files. I don’t want to use it for media streaming, though there are thousands of mp3 files on it. I upgraded it from firmware 2 to firmware 5 recently but the problem has been there for a while and the upgrade didn’t change anything.

It can work OK for hours then suddenly the drives appear not available for a variable period, up to maybe 15 minutes, then just as suddenly they all come back. During this time Pings still work fine and also I can still access the dashboard (always slow though). The shares become not available through any client and on my Windows PC this has the effect of blocking Windows Explorer completely, as it “hangs” waiting for the shares to appear in the list. Android devices just time out the connection. Any program using it also hangs (e.g. if it happens during a backup) but eventually frees up. I think it is running, just really REALLY slowly - but nothing says can’t connect, and Windows shows no error at all except a slow moving/stopped status bar.

Eventually it just comes back and everything continues as though nothing has happened. When it is working, read and write speeds are as expected. So my observations while it is in that state

    1. Blue light is on fine
    1. All diags pass
    1. PINGs are OK, no packet loss all the time (even when it’s playing up)
    1. I have SMB1 enabled on my PC (though I think this isn’t required)
    1. It occasionally goes days without me seeing a problem
    1. Tried different ethernet cables, ports on router and putting it on a switch
    1. It’s all been powered off and on many times
    1. If I reboot my PC while it’s in this state it is still in the state (i.e. it is not the PC)

I don’t want this to confuse the issue as this is recent whereas the problem has been the same for months, but after the firmware update I left on Twonky and DLNA and maybe iTunes. Since the update it has been indexing (now well over a week) and it has just reached 80%. I am not clear what causes the indexing but it obviously won’t help but I may as well let it finish and see if it improves, if not I will turn it off. But I have a feeling just giving cloud access causing indexing doesn’t it? If so does it re-index from scratch every time the content changes? And if I reboot will it resume from where it is or will it start over?

I haven’t tried a factory reset yet as it will take me ages to repopulate the data but that is probably the next step unless anyone has any ideas. I’ve not done it yet because I don’t think it will help. The step after that is buy a different NAS.

Hello,

Please refer to the following KBA article: My Cloud OS 5: Disable and Enable Indexing and Media Services

Thanks. As it happened, I eventually got fed up with it effectively hanging my PC and decided to stop Twonky and DNLA and it seems to have transformed it. It carried on indexing (presumably for the cloud) but finished fairly quickly (like 20% in 2 days whereas the 8u0% had taken weeks). I can now log into it without the dashboard timing out, so I think that must be an improvement which came with the new firmware.

Anyway fingers crossed that the problems have gone away.
