I have a large music collection (100,000+ tracks) which I copied to my 4TB WD MyCloud. The music is in the Shared Music folder as required. Media sharing is enabled, DLNA and iTunes server is enabled.
I am running iTunes version 11.1.3 on a Mac running MacOS 10.6.8. WDMyCloud shows up under the SHARED library in iTunes. When I select the WDMyCloud library, iTunes reports that it is loading the WDMyCloud library, but after about 4-5 minutes, it fails and brings me back to my local library.
I have tried rebuilding/rescanning both the DLNA and iTunes databases in an attempt to fix the problem. Interestingly, before the iTunes scan was complete, I COULD load the incomplete WDMyCloud shared library. I tried this several times while the scan was in progress and saw the song count get successively higher, so it appeared to be scanning properly. Once complete, however, I could no longer load the shared library into iTunes. I have seen no error notifications, and I am able to see my music via DLNA.
Can anyone provide any guidance as to what the iTunes problem might be or how I can troubleshoot? I bought the MyCloud primarily for this capability and have become quite frustrated trying to get it working!
Thanks - tried turning off DLNA, but that didn’t appear to fix anything. Also I would hope I wouldn’t need to disable DLNA as I’d like to access other media via non-Apple devices.
After browsing some of the other threads in this forum, I’m beginning to think I may be better off pointing my library on each Mac to the NSA files directly rather than sharing from the iTunes server on the device. It still bugs me that I can’t get the sharing to work, however.
I am wondering whether the number of files and scanning time is in your way at discovery/loading time… Did you try with a limited subset of your songs?
BTW, you don’t have to put the songs in the shared public folder. I put mine in an iTunes share that I created with public access and it works fine. iTunes on the PC and MAC see the share and play the Music. Make sure that iTunes preferences are set to discover shared libraries (preferences, general, shared libraries). You also need the bonjour protocol service to be turned on on Windows.
As I mentioned, I was able to access the partial library before it was entirely loaded, but I haven’t explicitly tested letting the scan process complete with a smaller number of files. That would kind of defeat the purpose if I couldn’t put everything on there, but I suppose it would indicate what the issue might be. I’ve had no problems sharing this exact same library from another computer (a mac), by the way.
It would be nice if there was some status information about the iTunes scan. DLNA at least reports the number of media files if sees, but there is no information from the iTunes service. I logged in to the device with ssh and poked around but I couldn’t even find anything that looked like an iTunes library file.
