I’m new to this device. Windows 10. firmware WDMyCloud v04.04.03-113 : Core F/W. bypassed router (plugged directly into computer Ethernet port)
The device worked for three days then the computer couldn’t find it yesterday. After resetting and rebooting a couple of times, it finally reappeared in windows Explorer. After resuming my backup yesterday it quit overnight - blue light solid. I have tried several resets and reboots (unplug/replug drive) and restarted computer. Still no joy.
I can access the dashboard by plugging in the UI address in my browser. So my computer can “see” the device. But windows Explorer and SmartWare can’t find it. Some error messages indicate that it can’t connect to the Internet but I have a good internet connection for everything else.Rear LEDs upper green blinking lower green solid. I tried to attach here the update.log file but .txt files are not allowed and the .zip file is too large. I have a dozen or so screenshots showing various errors. The dashboard is attached.
Let me know what I can provide to help diagnose this issue.
It should be noted that while one can connect the My Cloud this way, it is not really the intended method of connection. Rather the My Cloud is designed to be connected to a local network router (or switch connected to a router). Further, out of the box the My Cloud is designed to obtain an IP Address via a DHCP Server on the local network. Typically the local network router contains the DHCP Server.
When one connects the My Cloud in its default configuration direct to their local computer the My Cloud won’t obtain an IP Address from the DHCP server and will default to generic IP Address pool (usually in the 169.254.0.x range). The problem is that unless BOTH the local computer network port and the My Cloud are using the same IP Address subnet range the computer won’t be able to access the My Cloud. Further each time the My Cloud is rebooted its possible it may change its 169.254.0.x IP Address.
The workaround when connecting direct to the computer is to configure the My Cloud for a Static IP Address and to configure the local computer networking port for a Static IP Address in the same IP Address subnet range. By default the My Cloud is configure to obtain its IP Address automatically. One can change this setting via the My Cloud Dashboard > Settings > General > Network Services > Network Mode.
See the My Cloud User Manual (http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/?id=439&type=25) for more information on how to set the Static IP Address within the My Cloud.
If one has the My cloud connected to the local network, it is generally recommended one access their network router and configure the Static IP Address for the My Cloud within the router’s DHCP Server administration interface rather than through the My Cloud Dashboard.
Edit to add: Generally when one directly connects the My Cloud to their local computer’s networking port the My Cloud won’t be able to access the Internet unless the computer has a second network connection that is connected to the local network/internet and the user configures some sort of Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) or the like on the local computer and binds the networking port the My Cloud is connected to, to that ICS connection.
Thanks so much for your detailed reply. It does help.
I connected directly to the computer (bypassing router) because WD support recommended that configuration to speed up the data transfer for my first, large backup (1.5 TB).
Once I get my first backup I’ll connect through the router.
