MyCloud OS 5 and MacOS X El Capitan

Hi, I have an old (2007) iMac on which the latest operating system it will support is OS X El Capitan (10.11.6). I have recently upgraded my MyCloud storage to OS 5 and although I can see the MyCloud box in Finder, Time Machine doesn’t seem to see it any more. I have noticed that OS 5 doesn’t seem to officially support versions of OS X older than Sierra (10.12). Is there any way I can connect my MyCloud device to Time Machine?
Thanks in advance.

Did you follow the steps to switch to Time Machine over SMB? AFP compatibility has been removed from the latest firmware update.

Ah - no, I’m not sure what that is or where I’d find the appropriate documentation - perhaps you could kindly point me in the right direction?

Many thanks for your prompt reply.

There are loads of topics about this in the forum.
You can look at this (pointed out in the release notes): macOS Time Machine "Backup Disk Not Available" or Finder "Connection Error" on My Cloud OS 5

Or, just remove your current backup destination from TM panel and add it again. It should do the trick.

However, thinking about this, I wonder whether it will work with El Capitan… Maybe it will only work starting with macOS Sierra (10.12) because it introduced Time Machine over SMB… if it the case, I guess you are out of luck… Keep us posted.

I already removed the MyBackup destination from the TM panel with precisely that in mind, but when I went to re-add it it doesn’t appear in the list, yet, as I said, I can see and open the NAS contents in Finder. So I’m guessing I possibly can’t use it for backups.

I’ll reread the help topic suggestion you posted but I’m not too hopeful. Thanks anyway.

So, just saw that El Capitan does support SMB so I’ll try mapping the drive again, see what happens and post back what I find out.

Yes it does support SMB.
SMB has been default for macOS since Mavericks, although the SMB stack has improved since then.
But Time Machine needs some special SMB feature to work I believe, maybe not yet implemented in El Capitan.
