I have a WD MyBookLiveDuo 6TB which I want to transfer over to a MyCloudEX2 12TB
Both are on the same subnet on a home network. (Virgin Media SuperHub, cat6 cables all over)
I have enabled FTP access on the mybookliveduo under settings, network
I have enabled FTP access on the MyCloudEX2 under the settings, network, ftp and also under the share, ftp has been switched on.
I am then trying to create an FTP job under the MyCloudEx2 to grab files from the Duo and copy them to the EX2.
I have tried a variety of options and the jobs fail. Can someone instruct me step by step in getting this to work.
Possibly we can start by just transferring a simple text file from anywhere on the Duo to anywhere on the EX2 ?
Would be grateful for assistance. Just a reminder, this is all on the internal LAN so should be no need for the external IP or any mod/config of the EX2 via SSH .
You do not need to enable ftp on both the NAS. If I understood you right, you are basically trying to do a direct connect between them, and not trying to pull the files down to an intermediate PC first and then uploading to the destination NAS. Only if you do the intermediate way would you need to enable ftp on both…because enabling ftp really means enabling an ftp server…but what you really are trying by doing it directly is to have one act as an ftp client and the other ftp server. I do not have a Duo, so I do not know what it has in its firmware…my knowledge is limited to only the EX2 - and I know EX2 does not have an ftp client built into the firmware (I mean the firmware accessible via SSH…see next paragraph for an exception), but even if it did, it would require SSH use, which you’ve already indicated you aren’t interested in.
There is one simple way I could recommend…that does use ftp and does not require the use of SSH…but since I have never used that method myself, I do not know how well it works speedwise, or if it works at all…or has other issues…like for long transfer jobs if the web session times out and you do not know when the trnsfer job completes (I’d imagine it would complete once initiated - just not sure if the web session times out, how you’d know other than to check and compare the file/directory sizes). And this method basically would be to go into EX2’s dashboard, go into the apps tab, click on the FTP downloads option from the list on the left and then use that FTP download utility built into the dashboard to download files from an ftp server to a designated directory on your EX2. I would recommend you look at the EX2 manual if you aren’t sure what to enter in the fields. This would probably be you easiest way.
But since you only mentioned that your Duo is 6TB but you have not mentioned the actual size of data you are seeking to transfer over, I do not know how much data is involved. I do have my concerns using this method for very large file tranfers (by large transfers I mean data over 200GB)…but you can always break the transfer up into chunks, though it would be a bit of a pain to do this chunking manually. Hope this helps you get started.
Thanks for trying to assist, appreciate this. Just to clarify, I am looking to transfer around 5.5 TB of data, (mixture of media and backups ranging from files of 1gb to 10gb in size ).
I was actually referring to the FTP download option to setup a background task on the EX2 so that it would not rely on my laptop or computer to do the transferring.
This option does not seem to work at all and is not documented in the manual either.
I have in the end opted to order a Synology Diskstation DS215J and there is an application on that called Filestation and works on the same principle of using FTP session to download from a source device ( my old NAS ) to the Synology Diskstation. I can say this method worked straight away without any headache whatsoever. It is currently happily transferring away all the data , just would have expected similar from the WD device which is sooo far behind in its claims.
Wish I had opted for the Synology Diskstation a lot sooner. It is by far a much better product with much more configurable actions and applications. The DLNA server on it is really good too.
Thanks all, I am converting over to Synology, waving goodbye to WD forums , sorry WD you left me no choice. Hopefully you ramp up on the firmware and application side for your future products and existing ones for the sake of all the customer base of which I used to be one.
