Just got my WD TV Live Streaming and have not been able to get the network share working to play video. I have been troubleshooting for a few hours to no avail. I am not even able to get the WDLive to see my pc running Windows 7 32 bit. Two things I have been messing with: 1.) Folder share permissions 2.) Advanced network setting Firmware is 1.09.10 Can anyone help me out?
First make sure the PC is on the same workgroup with the WD TV SMP
can you connect to any other PC?
Check this articles for additional help with the network shares
If the suggested trooubleshooting did not fix the issue, try a reset by holding the reset button for 4 seconds, and also from a different computer to compare results.
Have you simply tried setting up a homegroup?
As long as your firewall is set to home and you have a homegroup setup shares should be seen fine by the wd .
Simply right clicking on the folder you wish to share with homegroup lets you set the share levels.
The homegroup name and password is of course the logon and password for your computer.

Hope that helps.
yes, I have tried the usual troubleshooting above.
As for power cycling the WDLive, it does a good job of doing that itself when it freezes.
As for the homegroup setup, that is something I have no yet tried.
Try homegroup its a very simple and direct way of sharing with the wd and it works perfectly.
Does everything your trying to do but its now just a few clicks in windows 7 rather then a lot of setup.
In under ten min you well be sharing with the wd without issue.
Its also secure so no worries there.
The homegroup did not work.
I notice the only way I can get it to see my PC is to reboot it. Then it magically appears and thre arrow stops spinning.
When the computer comes back up after reboot, I am not able to see the shared folders despite giving “Everyone” Read access.
What router do you have?
I had nothing but headaches with my linksys doing simlar things tell i final gave up on it.
Went and got a asus and had none of those issues since.
I have a linksys and have no issues with it.
I did find something really simple the other day.  We took the WDTV live with us on a trip and I messed around with the network settings.  Since I came home, it wasn’t being found from my computer.  I finally went and looked through the settings and down below the rest of the network settings you can turn network shares on or off.  I forgot that I had turned it off when we took it with us and when I turned it back on, everything was back in an instant.  maybe you’ll find something that simple.  Good Luck.
At one point, I was having many of these same issues. It turned out to have been caused by a bad network bridge in my house (a range extender). The problem was not discovered until this device finally failed completely, and when it was replaced with a new one, the WDTVLive finally woke-up and everything could “see” each other on my network. This drove me crazy for a long time, as it was flaky, sometimes almost working, sometimes not at all. It finally completely died yesterday, and was replaced after a quick trip to the electronics store. I was amazed that all problems were completely cured.
I feel your pain.
We have issues with our streaming devices and wonder whats wrong with them and sometimes miss that its not the device but our network.
I used to love linksys since its days of the wrt54g but now there routers seems to have gone downhill.
Since i replaced my last linksys 3200 with the asus n56u i been happy as can be .
Hi Magnus33
Could you tell me if you are using wired ethernet or wireless connection to connect the WD Live TV? I’m in the process of purchasing an N56U and want to be sure that I won’t run into any compatibility problems when streaming from the WD Live TV (via the N56U) through a WIRED ethernet connection.
Thanks very much
WIll.
Done both and you wont ahve any issues.
Thanks very much for your reply magnus33
Could I also ask if you are running the official Asus firmware in your N56U? Also, are you connecting to Windows shares from the WD Live TV?
It’s just that I read some reports of the N56U and WD Live TV not working together such as these links, and wanted to be sure:
http://forum.wdlxtv.com/viewtopic.php?f=&t=7356
It’s just odd that one of these users resolved their issue by installing beta firmware on the N56U
TIA
Will.
Iam presently using Beta Version 3.0.0.4_206Â found here. http://forums.smallnetbuilder.com/showthread.php?t=7567
Very stable and i prefer the look compared to the present stock firmware.
Had no issues with this setup and iam connected to windows homegroup shares without issue.
PS…there also a third party firmware by this guy that adds different freatures to that router.
Ah, thanks Magnus33. That’s what’s mentioned in this link:
http://forum.wdlxtv.com/viewtopic.php?f=&t=7356
i.e. That the beta version fixed the issue of the WD TV Live not being recognised.
So I guess it’s true that you need the beta firmware in order for the WD TV Live to work with the N56U.
I suppose it will be released officially shortly, so I guess it’s not the end of the world (especially since you say that it’s very stable already…)
I suppose I’ll just install that beta firmware as soon as I get the router.
Thanks again for you help.
Will.
It is beta in name only as far as i can tell its rock stable otherwise.
Got the 206 beta installed on the router and connecting up to the WD TV Live Windows shares (on a Synology NAS) without issue. Everything working fine. Thanks very much.
Will.
No problerm glad everything is working great.
