Network issue

Hi… i just bought a wdtv live plus 3 days ago and having problems with network sharings…  i’ve been reading a lot and seem to be doing something wrong… i’ve tried compuerguy’s guide but didnt really help…  after hours of reading and trying i’m getting a bit fed up… :s  everything on my network is shared… i can read anything from both of my computers running win 7 but when it comes to my wdtv live… the only thing i see on “media servers” is my two computers and the “video / music” content in my documents on both of them…  i had nothing in them… then i tried adding movies… which were detected… included other folders (which had mkv and avi in it) which were detected but not my “dvd” folders (iso and video ts files) .  my videos are on a seperate hardrive and i cant seem to access them unless i include them in my video library (except for the dvd folder).

(yes, i dont know much about networking but i have read a lot and it really bugs me that i can share everything on my computers but not on my wdtv live… which really **bleep** at this moment !!)

here are my settings:

turn on network discovery

turn on file and printer sharing

turn on sharing so anyone on the network access…

media streaming is on (tried off but didnt see anything on “my video” folder anymore

128bit encryption

turn off password protected sharing

i did set my folders to be shared individually and added permissions

i tried accessing network shares (STARZ88NETWORK) and was asked for a user password tried everything but still didnt get access… tried auto login (read that i wasnt supposed to be ask for user password if wired and left blank the user passord) but always get “this network share can not be accessed”  so i figured it must be likely for a media server (except for my pc/laptop) or external hard drive on my router which i dont have but planning to do since i dont know much about networking and media servers.

i have read from Tony that i should check my master browsers but always get “error 53 the network path cant be found” which i did some reading about it… did a ping test on the wd’s IP and no loss…   (found out after installing the wdtvlive’drivers in my network that  the wd’s IP 192.168.1.113) checked on my router linksys e3000 in security that "Filter IDENT (port 113) is enabled  and read about it… i shouldnt be unchecking it unless some application needed it… not sure if i’m on the right path… like i said… i know nothing about networking…

I also looked into deleting Windows Live ID assistant but didnt find it… i saw Windows Live sign in assistant" and did a search to see if it was the same but it didnt came conclusive… so didnt delete it… so… im kindda of  Lost right now… lol :s

i emailed wd support but i only get stupid feedbacks on how to share folders… so i’m hesitating to calling them…

Any help or directions would be really appreciated…

Thanx

Yes, Windows Live Sign-In Assistant will prevent shares from working.

Ok… I checked my settings from the beggining, i had found out not all of my folders were being shared correctly on my network… ( i had xp before and upgraded to win7)  i can access all my files now from both of my computers using win7 and have set the right permissions. I had also Homegroup on which i read wont work at this moment with wdlive. I uninstalled windows live sign in assisstant… rebooted everything (wdlive, computers) but now i still cant see anything on my wdlive. I cant access media servers (they dont detect my two computers anymore and when i try network shares, im asked for a password which i read to leave the account as “anonymous” and password blank… but always get " The network share can not be accessed".

so im thinking its really a master browser problem… well from what i’ve read that would be the last option left… (hopfully)   the thing is, i cant get to fix the “net view” command. i always get “System error 53 has occured… the network path was not found”. On microsoft website, they tell me to do an windows update which i did but still get the same error… something about connecting to the network… is there a way i can buypass this?

the only security program i’m using are widows firewall and microsoft essential securities besides the firewall on my linksys e3000 router.

I was thiniking, if i put an external drive on my router… would it be easier to share my files over the wdtvlive?

any help or directions would be appreciated and thanx tony for the reply !

after calling wd support and checking with them that every setting was correct… they told me that they coulndt help me but said that my problem was most likely related to my network / router… so i’ve checked every setting on my router and noticed my linksys e3000 had my workgroup spelled without caps… changed that and everything works fine now !! =D

i also retyped net view command and my system error was gone also…

That’s PURELY COINCIDENCE.   Workgroup names and Network Names are NOT case sensitive.

wOrKgRouP is the same as WORKGROUP is  the same as Workgroup, which is how Cisco spells it by default.

I’m guessing the E3000 was just “Stuck On Stupid,” and changing the workgroup name (which you actually didn’t change in any respect the rest of the network would see) reset the box.

I have two E3000’s, and I’ve seen similar events on mine.   That’s why I put them in their OWN workgroup, so they will NEVER interfere with my boxes again.

Hey Tony:

Would you mind sharing your exact E3000 settings that would likely work with the WD Live Plus HD?  …I’ve had networking issues with this thing since day one.  I somehow (accidentally?) got it working with my last Linksys router which has since died and bought an E3000 as a replacement and ever since have been unable to access my network shares on a year-old desktop running Windows 7.  Like many before me I’ve searched these forums and tried the various “fixes” to no avail and have the same problem the original poster had: “This network share cannot be accessed” (or the like).  …very frustrating since everything else works (Netflix, YouTube, etc).  I know all my folders are shared, as they worked with the last router after some tweaking, so I’m convinced the issue lies with the E3000.

Thanks for all your assist!

(BTW, I know a usual culprit in these issues tends to be the Windows Live sign-in Assistant.  Back with my previous router I had an update to sign-in assistant installed and had to uninstall it to get sharing to work, but I still had the ORIGINAL install of sign-in assistant running, yet it still worked.  I do still have that original install of sign-in assistant on my PC from 1/10/2010.  Should I get rid of that altogether you think?  I do online gaming and wonder if I’d be losing out on that if I were to uninstall it, but I’m not sure…)

Thanks again…

Yeah, I remember discussing this with you back in august in a different thread.

Everything I do was mentioned in that past thread, and you said it didn’t help…

Figured I’d try again in case any miraculous workups had been developed since then…

Thanks anyway.

actually the only thing i changed in my router was the workgroup name (from Workgroup to WORKGOUP) as i read it was important to be exactly the same in wdtv and pc… i took a guess… didnt really had a choice actually cuz i was about to return it to bestbuy… =p so coincidence or not… i really dont care !! =D  i’ve had password turn on on my windows advanced sharing… cuz i tried creating an account for the wdtv just like in a youtube video…  i turned it off…  and just had to clear user login to get it back on network shares… it dont matter to me if its coincidence… i was just sharing what i did to make it work for me…  ;)   like i said… im no expert…  but i dont mind doing the work to try and get it done !!   and yeah… i rebooted more than too many times everything on my network (wd, pc, router) changed some settings and see if it did anything good…  but at the end… it was really the workgroup name that made it work for me… hope this is helpful for someone…

im having trouble now with my hard drive i think… i have a 2tb wd green… just read it **bleep** pretty bad…  all my dvds are on that hard drive and they seem to be some freezing when i play them (or m2ts)…  avi works fine… tried to copy some dvds to my old ide disk… and it works really great… so i think im gonna get a new hard drive… i thought i was making a good deal by buying it last month for 140$… meh…

Heheh…  I’m no enemy of coincidence fixes!  ;)
