New N900 - With a new problem - Imagine that!

After finally getting my new RMA router from WD, I have noticed some new issues…

  1. Last four digits of router indicate a possible revision level.  Old last four digits on part number is -0000 for the old, new is -0010.  Very strange, WD has never mentioned a hardware revision, not sure on this.  It appears “fishy”.  Also the brand new router sent directly from Level 2 techs had 1.03.11 firmware on it.  Very strange that WD is shipping such an old firmware.

  2. When applying the 1.06.28 firmware from website, the router does not allow access of my android tablet.  It would allow basic internet access, but any Google services (picasa, sync, gmail, etc…) or play store will not work.  I have confirmed this many times with my netgear router when switching back and forth.  Once WD N900 is downgraded to 1.05.12 firmware, all is good.  The ironic issue is that my netgear router connected to the N900 as AP would allow the Google/android traffic over the hardwire LAN.  When using the wireless directly to the N900 it would not work.  I have tried to turn off all features one at a time and all off, no luck.  I have tried changing to no security on the WIFI with no luck either.

I know that the 1.06.28 firmware is still flaky at best, but is still posted on WD site as officially current.  This was demonstrated on a virgin router, reset to factory defaults, with upgraded firmware reset to factory defaults.  It appears that there is some sort of firewall issue with all of goggle’s services in the router when using the wireless services.

Devices are Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, Samsung Note 2 phone.  Both are identical android OS, with identical results.

The issue is inside of the 1.06.28 firmware, not in the older 1.05.12.

Did you try unplugging it and plugging it back in? LOL Sorry I just wanted to say it before a staff member told you to  Im having major issues with mine as well so I feel your pain

Glad you posted this I rolled back my firmware and my issues SEEM to be gone… we’ll see

Nissan what happens if you set one of the Android’s on a static ip with that IP in the DMZ?

I will try tomorrow.  I firmly believe the DMZ is a last resort as I did not try it.  It is a good point to bring up as it bypasses everything, in theory.

If others have any android devices suffering with 1.06.28 they know now.

I have the N900 as the only router during testing, then try swapping out with two separate netgear routers, then running the N900 as the main router with both netgear’s as AP’s for reference.

I am super curious about the model number change, I will post pics tomorrow.  The first thing I saw when I opened my brand new RMA was the model number…  Sounds fishy…  The even more strange thing is the N900 shows up twice in “My network” on windows 7.  When browsing the network I see two PC’s labeled N900, an AP named N900 and storage named N900.  Previously I only saw one N900 under the PC section…  It appears the new one has two brains???  Maybe it is smarter…

Despite my negative, crappy, hateful attitude in general towards this router… It has not crashed in 2 days despite a royal beatdown by me during testing.  I am uploading 5GB of pictures to my online picasa album via hardwire, while uploading 5GB of the same pictures to the USB HDD via hardwire also, all while backing up my laptop via wireless.  I cannot make it lock up.  As I make this statement it probably will burst into flames.  My fingers are crossed…

my netgear router connected to the N900 as AP would allow the Google/android traffic over the hardwire LAN

Stick with what works, my MyNet900 is working great as an AP.
