New (refurb'd) MacBook, can I use old MyPassport Ultra?

Can I wipe the Passport clean, so that I can use it on the new MacBook? How?
(Um, I need clear instructions; I’m pushing 80 y.o. and m’brain ain’t what she used to be!)
