New Release - Firmware Version 1.13.18 for WD TV Live Streaming Media Player (1/24/13)

I still hope that one day the function to adjust subtitles during playback will return. All other generations could do that with the arrow keys, without going to a sub-menu first. The keys have no other function during playback, why was that removed?

I agree. My girlfriend likes subtitles, I don’t… So I would move them down to the very bottom and we were both happy.

I also wish we could reduce the size of the Netflix subs and make them more transparent, but I’m guessing that’s a Netflix issue and WD has no control… or do they?

Are you actually downloading the firmware linked from that page?

If not, then you are NOT following the instructions.

Well,

I did, step by step, the unit does not recognize the files on the thumb drive (several actually since I tried at least 2).

Suggestions?

Have you tried the 10 minute skip mentioned in the manual?

Which you still can with text subtitles like SRT pressing Options > Adjust Subtitles > Position & Size. You never could with bitmap subtitles like VobSubs or PGS.

Yeah, lets verify what we know:

  • what is you player’s model

  • what firmware are you on

  • what firmware did you try to rollback to?

Yeah, lets verify what we know:

  • what is you player’s model
  • what firmware are you on
  • what firmware did you try to rollback to?

So I have,

  • what is you player’s model

WD TV Live Streaming Media Player

  • what firmware are you on

Firmware: 1.13.18

  • what firmware did you try to rollback to?

I want to go back to:

1.11.14

Ideally I wanted the one I had before which was 1.12.14

I tried both 1.11.14 (from the support page) and 1.12.14 (which I downloaded from a link posted on this thread).

None of the worked. The devide did not recognized the files on the USB thumb drive(s).

I also tried changing the version numbers on the .ver file, again zip, no luck.

I am now seriously getting stuck, and 80% of my collection is in Xvid.

Thank you in advance for your help,

J

Thanks for mentioning the subtitle problem. Sure you can adjust size and timing, but you have to press at least 7 times a button before anything is adjusted (and the movie ist paused or covered by the large first menu when hitting options). Main point is: the arrow keys have absolutely no function during playback, why is it not possible to bring the old function back? Let us at least configure that in the settings menu please.

You unzip the files to go on the thumb drive

you should have 3 files on the thumb drive:-  wdtvlive.bin, wdtvlive.fff and a wdtvlive.ver

I do/did, and then I insert the thumb drive in the streamer but it doesn’t recognize it.

Put some media on the same drive.  Does the WD recognize the media?   If not, then it’s not a firmware file issue, it’s a disk issue.

It creates the WD library when you attach the drives, so it’s not the media I assure you. Furthermore, I tried the same procedure with 4 different thumb drives.

Have you got update turned on in the setup.

I agree that usability is less than ideal but I think this of practically every device I’ve ever owned. However, I don’t remember being able to adjust the position with the arrow keys only. Do you know what firmware made this possible?

I’m stumped. The only time I ever had trouble updating from USB was due to a “damaged” stick. I put it in quotes cause the stick otherwise worked fine, it would just not let the WD discover any firmware update. With another stick it worked immediately. Try this on a low capacity stick:

  • create a a new single FAT32 partition in windows or with the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool

  • format the partition (no quick format)

  • unzip all files 3 from the wdtvlivegen3_rollback_1.11.14.zip to the stick’s root dir AND to your HDD

  • create an md5 hash on all three files on the HDD and copy it over to the stick to verify the files are ok

  120a05a6f4616729c74602cb486fba4c *wdtvlivegen3.bin
  6220199fdbace8c437a5f13465b7d5d6 *wdtvlivegen3.fff
  99f101d7f1e711473127f210bf32358b *wdtvlivegen3.ver

  • disconnect your SMP from the network and do a factory reset

  • plug in the USB stick (try the other USB port) and pray

If it doens’t work buy a Raspberry PI and enjoy XBMC

Ok Folks I managed to rollback my unit,

I followed the guide however I did the first steps diferently.

  1. Loaded the firmware to the USB thumb drive.
  2. Disconnect the power supply from the WD unit.
  3. Disconnected the LAN cable from the WD unit.
  4. Put the power cable back in.
  5. Devide booted.
  6. Firware update appeared.
  7. Followed the remainder of the drive.

At the weekend, I am going to see if I can update to 1.13.18 following the advice of some member here on how to update a firmware version.

If the result is the same as the last time I’ll report back here.

Thanks for all your help,

J

Hi, i have updated the firmware using your instructions, everything seems to be ok, even network windows smb are even faster !!!

The only thing i don’t like is that with this FW i can’t see FLV videos  but the other video formats (mkv, avi, mpg, mp4, dvd isos) i have are working ok.

Byeeee.

Techflaws wrote:> I agree that usability is less than ideal but I think this of practically every device I’ve ever owned. However, I don’t remember being able to adjust the position with the arrow keys only. Do you know what firmware made this possible?

It was never possible on the SMP, but on both previous WD players that i owned (WD TV HD and WD TV Live). I know that its totally offtopic here, but there are 4 different threads in the “ideas” section, up to 6 months old and all still listed as “new”. Just take it as a hail mary from my side, english is only my third language and I have to rely on subtitles for most media.

I had the same issue where on network shares I couldn’t play some of the blu ray rips that I encoded to m4v, worked fine on the previous version.

As a side note, I just bought this last week, so I haven’t had a lot of experience with it, But this isn’t a good start.  I have anAsusO!Playaswell, itdoesn’thavesomeoftheuserfriendlyfeaturesandinterface, butit’salwaysworkedonanyfileI’vethrownatit comparatively.

I followed the instructions to rollback successfully and everything worked.  I tried then upgrading, doing a factory reset before and after the upgrade.  The blu ray rips still wouldn’t work, however, I tried connecting to my NAS through media sharing, the Iomega NAS I’m using has the capability to be a media server as well.  When accessing the files as a media server everything works, exact same files, no changes to them what so ever.  So I’m a little confused as to why it will work when accessing as a media server, but not through a network share.

Hopefully this helps put WD in the right direction, I love the interface, and so does the rest of the family since it’s easier to use for them.  But it’s gotta work no matter how it’s setup to see the files.

Performed the firmware upgrade today. After the upgrade everything still plays fine but the media library seems to have gone crazy. I’m currently adding a lot of content to a My Book Live 3Tb NAS that the WD TV SMP points to (it is used as a Windows share but I have Twonky media server enabled so we can stream content to mobile devices at home as well). I have a second MBL that the primary uses as a safepoint backup drive overnight (given the time it’s taking to upload content I am not about to lose it all to a failed HD). Both MBLs are wired into a Netgear WNDR3700 router that the WD TV connects through over wireless. Every time I rescan the library on the WDTV I end up with thumbnails randomly swapped between movies and this happens whether I have meta data set to update automatically or manually. To be honest the whole media management piece has been a bit flaky since I got the device a few weeks ago with thumbnails randomly appearing and disappearing. At least with the new firmware it finally recognises and matches manually added thumbnails for content that wont scan from the external databases. I have tried a reset to factory defaults and deleting the relevant wd_tv folders to rebuild the database - I think tomorrow will involve a full factory reset and reapplication of the firmware upgrade (I assume I can reapply the firmware upgrade manually?)

I can see FLV videos from USB and network share, however some files can’t be played back due to the codec used. VP6 and Sorensen doesn’t work, AVC does.

Gosh, you’re right. I completely forgot about this due to all devices/firmwares/formats. And of course, I still think using the arrow keys to adjust would be more userfriendly.

Reboot your media server…the wd/computers/NAS and router.

Its always best to everything rediscover after you change  one of the devices.

Where did read about a 10 minute skip?

I re-checked the manual and page 163 of the current english manual only mentions the 10 seconds skip using the fast forward/rewind buttons. I also tried pressing almost every key during playback and going into options but couldn’t find anything.

Am I missing something here?

Section 7 page 47 of the latest manual. Fast forward / reverse and then press next / prev to skip 10 minutes.

Latest manual here.

Later. From reading back I believe the original question was to do with YouTube which I believe this does not apply to.
