New User - a few questions

I have ordered a wd mycloud ex4 (diskless) and it should arrive in a few days. In addition I have ordered 2 x wd RED 2Tb drives to go with it.

 Q1. With only two drives which storage system will it be best  to use before I get additional drives?

Q2. When I get additonal drives do they have to be all the same capacity (i.e. another two 2Tb drives) or a 4Tb + 1Tb for instance?

This exercise is a bit of an experiment. I’m  just using it as a learning experience. It may just end up being a devce for high capacity storage providing occasional access to my data over the Internet. I prefer to have control over my own data rather than using commercial services.

To answer yout questions:

A1. If you want data redundancy you can use RAID 1, if you want to have the full capacity you can go with RAID 0.

A2. You can have diffrerent size drive but will need to set them up in JBOD.

You need 3 disks to use RAID 5, minimum.  If you add a larger capacuty disk to a RAID 5 volume, it will work but will only allocate the size of the existing sets. IF you contonue to add larger volumes you can replace the existing volumes one-by-one and then, when completed, make the volume set larger.
