"newer" mp4 files with subtitles

Hello. Big problem here.

Every newer mp4 file playing with enabled subtitle is unwatchable. Stuttering & lag. If subtitles are off there is no problem.

Videos are played and tested over USB(fat, ntfs), Samba shares, NTFS shares - it’s all the same

I have found out that “newer” mp4 file means all with profile HP@4.0, or 4.1 because other mp4 with HP@3.1  have no issue.  (tested at least 3 videos with HP@3.1)

Also if mp4 is remuxed with mkvmerge to a mkv container issue is resolved (no re-encoding).

Please is there fix or must I remux all my files??? What is going on ?

What’s the subtitle format?   Timed Text?

it’s *.srt subrip

Upon muxing SRT into MP4s they are being converted to timed text and apparently the WDTV cannot play that. Curiously enough it does play MP4s with embedded VobSubs.

It is problem with external subtitles (srt) and mp4 files. The same mp4 file is remuxed without subtitles into mkv container and then playing that new mkv with the same external srt file. (then it’s OK)

Other files like avi  or mp4 < HP@4.0  are alo good . So I am not talking about subtitles inside containers but external subtitle *.srt.

“Newer” mp4 file is played ok until I enable subtitle in option on my wdtv remote. After that i have stutter and lag in periods beetween when the subs are displayed on TV meaning that video is unwatchable. (video starts to skip frames and audio is off)

Maybe you should have mentioned that right away? I’ve just encoded a DVD and a BD clip to MP4 with external subs and they play fine locally and from SMB shares. Profile is High@L4.1.
