Non-mirroring software for MY Cloud

Hi, guys.
First of all, sorry for my ignorance and perhaps a bit stupid question. I’ve read on the subject, but it doesn’t seem to cover my needs.
I’ve just bought wireless WD My Cloud. I want to copy my files to it and free the space from my mac ( to delete them just from the computer, but not from My Cloud).
Then it would be nice to use My Cloud as a hard disk - to operate with it freely and to use the files from it, but not to take my mac memory.
What kind of software should I use? I am using MyCloud Sync. Maybe there are setting that can do that. I am so not into those technologies!
Thanks for helping to a soul in need!
Mia

Wireless My Cloud? Are you sure you bought a My Cloud device? The My Cloud is not wireless. It uses an Ethernet wire to connect to the network router. One can see the WD SUpport site to see images of their device to figure out which device one has.

One can then read the User Manual for their device and download supported software.

IF one wants to “backup” their computer rather than “sync” to a local My Cloud one can use Smartware for Windows or Apple’s embedded Time Machine on Mac’s. Smartware can be downloaded from the WD Support site.

There are a number of paid and free third party programs for backing up, syncing, and mirroring to a local My Cloud.

SmartWare and Sync are utilities to backup files on a machine to the MyCloud, or synchronise files between a machine and the MyCloud. Neither of them moves files from Mac to MyCloud

You want to map the drive into your Mac’s file system, so it appears as a network-connected hard drive. Then you will be able to move files to it, making the MyCloud your data master disk.

Note that when you do this, the MyCloud will become your data master, NOT a backup. You will need to perform backup of the MyCloud to another drive (using either the MyCloud’s internal backup facility, or a third-party backup software).

Hi @cpt_paranoia!

Thanks for your fast answer. I am sure I am using WD My Cloud.
That thing about mapping MyCloud and using it as my data master ( which for me means my main hard disk) sounds great. But then another question appears - if I am not at home ( where MyCloud is located) will I have a hard disk at all? Will my mac recognize its scratch disk when automaticaly if MyCloud is not there? Sorry, one more time for my weird questions…

Cheers,
Mia

You are not eliminating your Mac’s HDD entirely; you are adding another data disk to store data on. You will still have the Mac OS and whatever other files you leave on the Mac. You just won’t have access to the files you have moved to the MyCloud.

Think of it like a USB HDD, only connected via your LAN. If you moved a lot of files to a USB HDD, and then disconnected the USB HDD, you wouldn’t be able to access the files on it.

Now, the difference is that the MyCloud does allow some remote access, if you set it up properly, via the files.mycloud.com remote access web-based portal. It’s not as easy to use as a mapped network drive, or a USB HDD, but it does give some access.

It sounds like you would benefit from downloading and reading the User Manual.

BTW, Bennor asked that question because you mentioned wireless, and, as he pointed out, the MyCloud is not a wireless access device; it is a wired Ethernet access device. You may be accessing it via your WiFi router, but it is not a WiFi device; your router is providing the WiFi access.

Hang it all!

I was about fifteen seconds from posting my own reply when I looked up from my keyboard and noticed you said the exact same thing. . . . .

You gotta think fast on this group if you want to do anything!

@cpt_paranoia, @jharris1993 - you are awesome!!
The whole thing is that I am a designer and I am printing clothes, so I am using the same files ( over 2GB each) every day, but their quantity becomes bigger and my mac’s space is not enough anymore.
So I bought MyCloud. Now after that tutorial I can move my files to WD and delete them from my mac, but you mentioned I won’t have an access to them? How am I gonna use them on a daily basis?
I’ve read the user manual and didn’t find anything about that in it. :frowning:

Thank you guys, for the support and the fast reactions!!

You will have access to them if you are local to your home network. Provided you have wired or wireless access to your router, and, via your router, to the MyCloud, you will have full access to all the files stored on the MyCloud (provided you have mapped the appropriate shares as network drives).

You will not have full access if you are not at home. Remote access requires a data connection to your MyCloud at home. You need to consider the uplink rate of your internet connection at home, and your downlink rate at your remote location. 2GB files will take a long time to transfer unless you have gigabit access (unlikely, unless you’re in South Korea or Singapore).

You need to think about these issues before you decide what data to move.

Oh, My God, this is so confusing…
I think I got it ( or most of it), however, I am trying to follow those steps that you guys recommended: Error

Everything is fine until Step 4. where I should Choose a share on the drive and press OK. There is no such an option. I just got: TimeMachine, Public, and Smartware and that’s it.

Now what? :frowning:

What happened when you selected either Public, Time Machine or Smartware? Did the OK button become active and did you click it?

Basically what a "Share is, is a top level folder on the My Cloud. Public, Time Machine, Smartware ARE Shares. You create that “Share” through the My Cloud Dashboard. You can create as many Shares as you like through the My Cloud Dashboard. One can set the Share to Private and enable which Users (also created through the Dashboard) have access to that Share. One can also enable Media Serving on that Share to allow for any media within that Share to be streamed to client devices using DLNA or iTunes (audio only). If you don’t know how to access the My Cloud Dashboard see the following WD support knoowledgebase link.

If you haven’t done so already, read the My Cloud User Manual (https://support.wdc.com/product.aspx?ID=904) which explains how to use the various functions/options of the My Cloud device.
