Norton is viewing files as a threat while syncing

Norton is saying the IP of WDMycloud is attacking my PC while it is syncing trusted files…

Anyone had that before???

I am now chatting with Norton and they are quite surprised…

I’ve never come across this particular scenario, but Norton are definitely the right people to be talking to. My suspicion is that somehow one of the trusted files got infected. Some of these new malware strains are really sneaky and can get in all sorts of ways. That being said, I’m not a malware expert so I’ll leave a proper diagnosis in Norton’s capable hands.

Where did the video file come from?

It came from a Torrent site but was already scanned by Norton and is on my PC for about 6 months.

Just to be sure, I scanned the file again, no problem

But it’s not one file, Norton thinks the NAS is hostile and blocks the entire IP of the NAS…

Maybe Norton are reacting to the fact that the MyCloud is riddled with unresolved security vulnerabilities…

If this was the case, we’d most likely know about it here on the community pretty quickly. People would be posting about Norton blocking them in droves. It’s a pretty popular anti-virus.

I’ve been chatting with 3 different people at Norton who took over my entire computer and they didn’t find a solution.

The problem is now passed on to their development department who will contact me to cooperate in some tests to solve this and other problems. I would be rewarded for this, they said…

What Antivirus on the WDMycloud concerns, what do you guys/girls think is the best free solution??

Yes.

But sarcasm aside, how about a definitive statement on which of the identified vulnerabilities have actually been plugged by the latest firmware?

I recently ran Norton’s FREE Power Eraser program (you can D/L from their site). It probes deeper than the Norton Security. A little too deep, so you need to be careful and be very sure if you let it delete anything. I recognized some very rare programs that were flagged (Savings Bond Wizard from US gov) . This program is OK, but Norton had no history on it, or a certain Beta Tools program on the PC and flagged it. So, NO, I have never let it delete those or a few others I recognize that it flagged.

Run NPE.exe and see what happens. Just be careful about deleting.

Any official statements and announcements can be found in the News and Announcements forum and/or pinned to the top of the relevant product’s board and/or on the Newsroom section of the corporate site. If something isn’t posted there, I don’t have anything I can say at this time.

Well, I use Norton and no problems with my MC. Apparently, the OP’s problem is unique to him,

Mike27,

What do you mean by OP? And unique to who? English is not my native language…

OP = original poster, that should be you.

The problem is unique to me but from my chat buddies at Norton I learned it’s a first for them too…

The development team will contact me whenever they’re ready examining the problem and the
steps already taken…

I don’t know why but I like this…

OK, now you know what OP means as it pertains to forum posts.
I was responding to another poster who was inferring the issue may be related to things going on with WD as related to problems of their devices’ vulnerabilities, and I pointed out that YOU (not lots of people) are having the issue with Norton, so your issue is unique to you as confirmed by Norton people.
Good luck getting it resolved

Meanwhile the problem suddenly stopped.

But yesterday I got a phone call from a Dutch speaking Norton R&D guy who wanted to discuss the problem some more.

You can’t say there not thorough, the Norton bunch…

I “simulated” a sync fom my NAS to the PC, went perfect. The men from Norton(or was it U.N.C.L.E?.. ), Yes there were already 2 persons chatting with me and took over the computer. I could perfectly see what they were doing.

I think, for them, the most important thing were the log files from the past week. They would study it and mail me the results, could take about 2 weeks they said. I got a case number and a direct tel.nr. from the Dutch guy saying “Call anytime, if I’m not there, my colleagues will find me fast…”

I also got 3 months prolongation of my Norton contract, jippie!!

All this together means they take this quite seriously, I think.
.
Can you believe I just want the problem to occur again just once to see what steps they will take…

The only thing we really changed was update the drivers of my network card(which were from 2015, BTW)
