Not working... after power off Help

Turn power off to WDlive, and when turned back on it said:

Insert a USB drive with firmware to recover your WDTV

I have tried everything for the past 2 hours, when i does start to load firmware, it just continues to loop, doing the same thing over and over and over…

Tried going back to normal release of WDlive site, bit still getting the above note on the screen, cannot get it to load at all now…

Dead dead dead.

Help.

Sounds like the flash memory may have gone bad.

Call WD Tech Support and have them walk you through it.

If it’s still under warranty, they’ll replace it if it can’t be recovered.

Have you just updated your firmware. Have you tried pressing the reset on the side for a second using a paperclip. What firmware are you using on the USB to recover the WDTV.

Thanks…

I have tried everything over a 3 hour period and therefore I will contact WD here in Australia and see what goes… I purchcased here in Australia back in March this year.

I did try many versions of Firmware, but it just continued to loop around and around reloading the firmware, not matter what version I tried. Also tried the reset button… Man I tried every thing…

It’s stuffed… A real bummer as I love this little unit…

Cheers.

Craig.

Ok, hold on a sec…  We might be talking about a different issue here.

So, NOW, when have no USB devices inserted and you power it on, you get the big nasty Black / Red / White screen?   Even after loading firmware?

…or is it coming up fully now but telling you over and over again that it has new firmware?

Hi,

Thanks for the prompt reply.

Ok… Well… both.

What happened last night was I powered off the unit to move a few things around my media centre and then plug it back in.

After a moment, I noticed on my TV a black screen with a notice asking me to connect a USB drive with firmware… this was written in many many lanuages.

I then did that, it loaded the firmware from the USB drive, rebooted, but then continued to re-load, reboot, re-load, reboot, re-load and so on and so on…

Turned off the unit and the same message came up. Did the same thing over and over and over, tried different firmware versions, but I gace up after around three hours of trying everything.

Hope that makes sense.

Cheers.

Craig.

Just out of curiosity, what Firmware package did you put on the USB key?

Hi,

I did have the latest Beta… But… after this crash, I tried the standard version off the WD website for the WDTV Live…

Tried a few other earlier versions as well.

So what do you think?

Trash ???

Contact WD support ???

Yeah, tech support.

Thanks… Wish me luck.

Cheers.

An advice: use the rollback firmware: wdtvlive_rollback_1.02.21(1.03.42_v) When it happened to me, it worked.

If you have installed the latest beta you do realise that to roll back you need to user the roll back firmware or edit the ver file to fool the WDTV into rolling back. The standard firmware download will not work.

dont need rollback firmware if u have this message one screen

Insert a USB drive with firmware to recover your WDTV.

any firmware works.

the latest beta versions in update dont have progress bar only blank screen.

Do they? I had a progress screen!

Hi Guys,

So what are you guys all saying ??? Can I repair my system from what I have said??

What steps can I do to recover my unit ???

Please !!!

I see some comments about editing the ver file to trick th device into thinking it’s loading an later version but it’s loading a earlier version.

The problem I am having is that screen that comes up and says “Insert USB drive with firmware to recover your WDTV Live”

Have tried that many times, and it looks as if it’s loading the firmware, then it re-booted, but would just do over and over and over, and I end up turning off the unit… When I turn it back on the same warning comes up.

Do you think if I edit the version file and reload an earlier version, it may work?? Desperate to get it going again!!!

Cheers.

As has been said you are getting the firmware recovery screen which only normally presents itself when something goes wrong with a firmware update. I would make sure that you have the 3 firmware files in the root of a USB drive (no other files present). Now try with the USB drive in one port and if that does not work try the other port.

I would then seriously consider returning it under the guarantee. Its a bit difficult to troubleshoot these type of problems at a distance.
